On [XXX], at approximately 67,219 miles, I brought the vehicle to J&L Auto & Tire Center in Nyack, New York, for evaluation.  The repair facility documented the complaint as \u201chard time steering wheel\u201d and recommended replacing the rack-and-pinion steering gear assembly with a rebuilt unit. The estimated repair cost was $4,901.84, including labor, parts, and tax.  I contacted American Honda after the repair facility advised me to investigate a possible known steering gearbox issue affecting certain 2017\u20132018 Honda Civics. Honda informed me that my VIN was not included in Safety Recall 18V-663 / Service Bulletin 18-102 and that the repair would not be covered under that campaign.  I am concerned that this steering failure may represent a broader safety issue affecting additional 2018 Honda Civics that were not included in the original recall population.  The existing Honda recall addressed a steering gearbox defect that could cause unexpected steering input. Although I cannot confirm that my vehicle experienced the identical internal defect, I believe the steering failure warrants investigation to determine whether there is a common underlying problem or a broader defect affecting vehicles outside the original recall.  A steering system that becomes difficult to operate can compromise a driver\u2019s ability to control the vehicle and may increase the risk of a crash, particularly during emergency maneuvers.  I respectfully request that NHTSA review this complaint alongside other reports of steering rack failures and difficult or sticky steering in 2017\u20132018 Honda Civics to determine whether further investigation or an expanded safety recall is warranted. At the second-to-last STOP sign on our route, a yellow slip indicator light suddenly appeared on the dashboard. We did not know why. We wondered if we had accidentally touched a control near the steering wheel. The brakes still worked normally, and my husband stopped completely. I photographed the warning light. Since we were only a few minutes from home, we continued cautiously, planning to check the warning once home. Shortly afterward, we were driving downhill on [XXX] toward the next STOP sign at [XXX]. My husband applied the brakes, but the vehicle did not slow as expected. It continued downhill, gained speed, and entered [XXX] without stopping. [XXX] is normally busy. Fortunately, no vehicles were directly in our path, and no collision or injuries occurred. My husband turned on the hazard lights and drove slowly while looking for a safe place to stop. The normal brakes still could not bring the vehicle to a complete stop. He eventually stopped at a repair shop using emergency measures. We left the vehicle there because it was unsafe to drive. Afterward, my husband noticed that a rear brake pad appeared loose or detached and the rotor appeared deeply grooved. We do not know whether this caused the braking failure or whether the earlier warning light was related. The vehicle remains parked and available for inspection. No mechanic has inspected it, the problem has not been reproduced, and the cause is UNKNOWN. We reported the incident to Toyota USA on October 26 and contacted a Toyota dealer. We request that NHTSA document and evaluate this serious safety incident.
