Before repair, the check-engine light appeared intermittently, the vehicle sometimes had difficulty starting, and the indicated electric range could suddenly drop from about 30 miles to zero despite a charged high-voltage battery. When this occurred, the gasoline engine started unexpectedly. The air conditioning also intermittently blew warm air until the vehicle was restarted. These symptoms created a safety concern because propulsion mode and indicated range could change without warning, and the vehicle could fail to start in traffic or another unsafe location. An authorized Chevrolet dealer confirmed the problem. The dealer retrieved DTCs U2624 and U2629, performed circuit testing, and diagnosed an internal short in the BECM causing loss of communication with high-voltage battery modules. The dealer stated this failure caused the warning light, starting issue, sudden loss of indicated battery range, and air-conditioning symptoms. The BECM was replaced and programmed after removal of the high-voltage battery assembly. The warning light first appeared about one month before repair, with the other symptoms becoming more apparent in early July 2026. The vehicle had approximately 80,918 miles when inspected. The failed component was retained by the dealership as a core and is not available to me for inspection. To my knowledge, the vehicle was not separately inspected by police, insurance, or GM engineering personnel. My vehicle was excluded from GM Special Coverage N232432680 even though it is a 2018 Chevrolet Volt with the same confirmed BECM failure addressed by that program and NHTSA investigation PE23022. I paid $3,970.56 for the repair. I am filing this complaint because this defect can cause no-start, loss of indicated battery range, warning lights, unexpected propulsion changes, and potentially reduced propulsion, while some affected 2016\u20132018 vehicles appear excluded from the special coverage.","products":[{"type":"Vehicle","productYear":"2018","productMake":"CHEVROLET","productModel":"VOLT","manufacturer":"General Motors, LLC"}]},{"odiNumber":11748638,"manufacturer":"General Motors, LLC","crash":false,"fire":false,"numberOfInjuries":0,"numberOfDeaths":0,"dateOfIncident":"03/01/2026","dateComplaintFiled":"07/06/2026","vin":"1G1RC6S51JU","components":"UNKNOWN OR OTHER","summary":"My 2018 Chevy Volt started making a creaking and clanking noise when driven at low speeds. However, due to my car originally being registered in California, this failure is not covered under GM Special Coverage Bulletin N232432680 (issued March 2024), which provides an extended warranty for BECM issues on affected 2016-2018 Volts up to 15 years or 150,000 miles. My VIN does not qualify for this coverage despite the vehicle being within the model years affected by known BECM soldering/connection failures. This appears to be part of a broader pattern of BECM defects in 2016-2019 Volts that can lead to sudden loss of propulsion, as previously investigated by NHTSA. This syndrome is well documented in the GM-Volt online forum. Additionally this vehicle has portions of the EV battery that failed, I am still waiting for battery parts to arrive and its been 4 months, many owners have waited between 1 and 2 years for the battery to be fixed, this contributed to this issue as the electric propulsion would have possibly been available if the warrantied battery was repaired within a reasonable timeframe. I was refused a service loaner. My recent contact with Chevrolet customer service suggested I rent a car, and they will reimburse $45 per day, however they insist I pay for it and when the repair is complete, they will reimburse me. There is a gentleman on the Volt forum who has laid out about $5,000 on rental cars for well over a year, and is finally reluctantly getting a buyback, but they depreciated the car but did separately make good on the rental reimbursement. Neither he nor I really want that result, we want the car repaired in a good faith effort, instead both battery parts and EGR valves are in short supply. Currently the GM part is between $1400 and $2500 when in 2024 the same part was widely available for $240. However, Chevrolet has refused to cover our VIN under the existing special service bulletin, despite our vehicle using the same faulty part number as those included in the recall, and has provided no explanation for this exclusion. As a result, we are being forced to pay $2,100 out of pocket to replace a part that GM knows is defective. This is an unacceptable financial burden for a safety-critical issue. GM should immediately issue a recall for all vehicles equipped with this faulty part number to ensure the safety of all drivers and prevent further undue costs. The fuel gauge side of the console was lit in yellow and said something like \"No fuel detected.\" Pulled over to the shoulder and found the engine would start, run, and then die. An IN State Police Officer was kind enough to offer us an escort to the next exit near mile marker [XXX]. Noticed that the engine would remain running for longer periods and finally stayed on continuously. While being escorted, was able to run the speed up to 55 mph and made it safely to the interstate exit. During this time my son was checking online and found that the problem might be due a blown fuse. At the [XXX] exit we found a Pilot station that carried fuse sets. One of the sets had the fuse we needed. We bought two sets. We replaced the fuse--it had blown--and the car ran well again. This fuse is called \"No walk home.\" We were able to continue on at 70 mph until stopping at a friends home in western PA for a few hours rest. While at our friend's home we partially charged the Volt's battery giving us about 20 miles of electric range. While in electric mode we stopped for gas. We drove through the mountains without incident then stopped for gas again in central PA at the Cumberland Valley Service Plaza. Filled the tank and while accelerating from the plaza again lost power and had to pull over. Replacing the fuse solved the problem once more. It appeared that turning off the engine while in gas mode and then turning the engine back on leads to the fuse blowing. The vehicle was in full EV mode in the middle of a busy intersection. The vehicle had a full charge (50+ EV range remaining or 100% total EV remaining). The driver attempted to press down more on the accelerator to no avail. After approximately 5-10 seconds, in the busy intersection, without the ability to make the vehicle accelerate, the driver noticed the vehicle jerk (which occurred 2-3 times) at which point the ICE turned on and provided power to the vehicle, allowing the driver to drive out of the intersection. After several minutes of driving, the driver noticed \"Reduced propulsion warning\" was noticed/illuminated in addition to \"Check Engine Light\". After this point, the driver noted that the propulsion felt approximately 20% of \"normal propulsion\". The driver was also concerned about the ability to drive up very small hills due to reduction of propulsion/power. Upon arrival at the destination (2-3 miles from incident), the vehicle was safely parked, the vehicle's codes were checked with an OBD2 code reader and 19 codes were noted. Given the manifestation and safety issue of the vehicle, the vehicle was towed to Quality Chevrolet in Escondido where it remains as of 1/10/23. The codes collected on 11/21/22 include the following: 1. P0A46, 2. P0AC4, 3. P1E00, 4. P1B0B, 5. P1B43, 6. P1E1E, 7. P0AC4, 8. P1E00, 9. P0A46, 10. P1AF0, 11. P1AF2, 12. P1B0B, 13. P1B43, 14. As of 1/9/23, the dealer has indicated that the primary problem is with the entire Transmission assembly which requires replacement. I was traveling east bound on 84 in northeast PA on my way to Long Island for work meetings that day. I was about one hour and a half away from my home at roughly 6am. I was traveling at apx. 70 mph when my car suddenly says \"engine unavailable, reduced propulsion.\" and the fueld tank turned yellow in color on my dashboard. Then a sign said \"service soon.\" My car then COMPLETELY STOPPED WORKING. My speed fell from 75 mph or so to 0 in a matter of a minute, I had no idea what was happening because there were no appropriate warnings such as, \"Pull over immediately\" or \"SAFETY CONCERN PLEASE GET OFF THE HIGHWAY\" -I would have taken anything to know that this was an actual emergency and I needed to at least get to a shoulder. I luckily was able to come to a stop mostly off the highway in a shoulder. I was located around a bend, in the pitch black, unable to stay in my car out of fear I would be smashed by a tractor trailer or car that did not see my car suddenly stopped. The car would not go in neutral or anything other than park and I left the hazards on (they eventually failed). I called my husband who drove to me while I stood on the side of the highway for an hour and a half in 30 degree weather. I called the police who were eventually able to put up flares and mark me as a hazard on the road. If there was a car traveling behind me, I would have been killed or seriously injured because I slowed so suddenly and had no way of knowing that this was an absolute emergency. The worst part is that this is the second BECM failure in my volt and I have driven less than 1000miles since it was repaired the first time (which took >5 months). The first time this happened my car was on a quiet town road and my brother who was driving just parked and had it towed. He hadn't thought there were any warnings but he wasn't sure. I HAD MENTIONED TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY THAT THE VOLT'S BRAKES JUST DID NOT FEEL ON PAR WITH THE REST OF THE CAR AND WOULD BE THE ONLY ASPECT OF THIS EV EXPERIENCE I FOUND LACKING. I HAVE THE DATED TEXT MESSAGES TO PROVE THIS. NOW I HAVE A VOLT AT THE BODY SHOP FOR THE 5TH WEEK (LACKING AN AC LINE FOR REASSEMBLY), AN OVER 55% INCREASE IN MY INSURANCE PREMIUMS (PER THE RENEWAL NOTICE I JUST RECEIVED) AND WHAT REALLY HASN'T BEEN A GOOD EXPERIENCE. WHILE I'M WAITING FOR THE RETURN OF MY VOLT I HAVE RECEIVED THE IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL INDICATING THE BRAKING PERFORMANCE MAY BE REDUCED. IF THE CAR HAD BEEN ABLE TO STOP TWO FEET SHORTER I'D HAVE AN UNDAMAGED THREE MONTH OLD VOLT AND MY INSURANCE STANDINGS UNTARNISHED. THAT TWO FEET ENDED UP COSTING OVER $17,500 TO THE CAR.
