I have personally experienced repeated and dangerous incidents of phantom braking, overcorrection, and loss of control while driving a 2019 Toyota Prius. The car suddenly brakes, swerves, or pulls sharply when it detects shadows, road inclinations, or mild curves — making it unsafe to drive, especially at highway speeds. These events occur without any driver error. To make things worse, this issue is not limited to one brand or vehicle. Over the past year, I have driven and rented multiple cars from different brands and models through rental companies, and many of them presented the exact same unsafe behavior — unpredictable braking, steering correction, and traction instability. This clearly indicates that the issue is industry-wide, not isolated to a single manufacturer. I have been a professional rideshare driver for over five years, completing more than 500,000 miles without a single accident or ticket. Since October 2023, these vehicle behaviors have made it nearly impossible for me to continue working safely. This situation has destroyed my livelihood — I am now three months behind on rent, my mental health has been severely impacted, and I am facing homelessness for the second time in two years. All of this has happened because of unsafe technology that drivers cannot fully disable, even when it is clearly malfunctioning. I respectfully ask NHTSA: Why are automakers allowed to release and maintain these unsafe systems on public roads? Why do drivers not have the right to safely disable malfunctioning ADAS or self-driving features, like any other electronic system that can be shut down in an emergency? When will NHTSA take meaningful action to stop these dangerous practices before more lives are affected?
Rear hatch on my 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E (VIN: [XXX] , mileage: 31,751 km) opens spontaneously without user input. I firmly reject the insinuation that I drove that distance—I maintain an accurate charging and usage log proving otherwise—and I demand a refund of my warranty payment plus a prompt and transparent investigation. Key Facts & Concerns 1. Sudden mileage spike (~10,000 miles in 3 months) • I did not charge or drive anywhere near that distance. My charging logs and event logs—comprehensively detailed—show a maximum of [X] miles total for that period. • The odometer reading is simply inconsistent with verifiable usage data. 2. Likelihood of system error or tampering • Similar issues have been documented in EVs: • Tesla vehicles are currently under multiple lawsuits alleging artificially inflated odometer mileage, sometimes by as much as 15–117%—accusations that have triggered a proposed class-action in California and garnered widespread reports and press coverage . • Ford EV owners have also flagged odometer anomalies—both underreporting and overreporting, including a Ford Lightning report revealing odometer mismatch in a vehicle health report (). 3. Legal precedent and consumer protection • Odometer manipulation—even unintentional—is taken seriously under federal law (Federal Odometer Act), with strict penalties for tampering . • Odometer discrepancies significantly affect warranty eligibility and residual vehicle value. What I Want Ford to Do 1. Full refund of the prorated warranty cost, as it has been voided unfairly by incorrect mileage totals. 2. Comprehensive odometer and software audit of my vehicle. I request a certified statement of findings. 3. Corrected mileage records and warranty reinstatement based on actual usage. 4. There was no power to anything, and the stop was sudden and steering was extremely difficult. Washington State Patrol and Washington Department of Transportation responded to provide safety assistance while eastbound traffic on [XXX] backed up for several miles. The car is now at Frontier Ford in Anacortes Washington and they have confirmed its status as completely dead. In fact it took almost an hour to get the car off the tow truck. The dealership tried several battery jumper options to the 12v battery but when they worked it seemed to only work for a few seconds before the car “bricked” again. There is probably a WSP police and WSDOT report about responding to this incident. In the seconds before the complete electrical shutdown there was a cascade of warning notices then everything went blank and the car abruptly stopped in traffic. It took over an hour to get a tow truck and then the cars “bricked” status made the towing job very difficult and eventually the car was literally dragged onto the flatbed with a winch. This incident happened during rush hour in heavy traffic and both occupants safely was put at high risk of a high speed collision from traffic approaching from the rear of the car. I got a message on my Ford pass saying High voltage Battery warning. The car stopped charging at 59 percent of the battery capacity. The vehicle has only 2800 miles on it. Also got a power train malfunction/ reduced power warning as well and a service wrench when you turn on the car. This high voltage battery warning is a known issue on 2022 as I had it happen to me while driving it in a turn as I own one of those as well. But this is the 2023 that is not recalled. I have parked it outside of my garage as if the battery is getting hot enough to where it will stop charging this puts these vehicles all at the risk of something called thermal runaway. I do now know why this is not mentioned or even talked about with these types of batteries but basically, this happens when one cell goes into thermal runaway from being too hot and can melt the car. This is a huge safety concern. I have complained about it multiple times but have been ignored. I have parked my vehicle outside of my garage as I fear it may go into thermal away. I will take it to the dealer tomorrow. Please fix this NHSTA it's still not fixed. Happened to my 2022 Mustang Mach E with an extended-range battery now it's happening to my 2023 Mustang Mach e with an extended battery neither of which is part of the recall. I am not sure one of my cars looks like it may be arched but this letter from ford is ridiculous. I request a recall to inspect all charge port pins in all 2023 and 2022 mustang mach e's. I also request since ford is known for trying to use software to update electrical parts that may arc (I.E the battery control module) that a separate investigation be opened to this matter. There is currently no recall for this and I have a concern for both my vehicles now if arching can take place. Furthermore I have had two charging cables burn up on my 2022 mustang mach e Vin number [XXX] but thats besides the point. Point is there is no recall to something that software not installed that doesn't have a transfer function that predicts the charging port pin/terminal temperature. This seems like basic engineer electronics that should have been designed from the beginning to do this. With all the electrical issues these cars have I also question the entire design. More questions to follow are is this software not being installed on my car damaging my charging cable? (I.e why i had two get fried already and possibly have a third i just have not had time to take the third cable in yet) Also why are we not getting our cars inspected in a recall? If this software doesn't monitor the charging pin port/terminal temperature what if 10,000's of vehicles have arched terminal pins in them? We would never know if not been inspected.
