This occurred at just 44,000 miles, mere weeks after my manufacturer warranty expired in June of 2026. This issue goes far beyond a financial inconvenience or a matter of consumer reimbursement; it is a severe, life-threatening safety hazard that GM has failed to permanently resolve. My Experience: Sudden Power Loss While Towing The gravity of this part failure became clear during a recent drive. I configuration-matched this vehicle—a heavy-duty Yukon XL with a 6.2L engine and a 4x4 towing package—specifically for its capacity to safely haul heavy loads. While traveling with a trailer attached, the vehicle experienced a sudden, catastrophic loss of engine power. Without warning, the engine sputtered and died. Had this occurred on a steep incline, a blind curve, or in heavy highway traffic, a catastrophic multi-vehicle collision would have been entirely unavoidable. Critical Safety Hazards and Concerns •Inability to Maintain Speed, Loss of Vital Assist Systems, & Compounded Towing Risks Systemic Failure and Inadequate Remediation What makes this situation entirely unacceptable is that this specific vehicle was already subject to previous GM safety campaigns regarding this exact component (including Safety Recall #N212332040 and subsequent Emission Recall #N252516900). GM is fully aware that their supplier produced defective modules that are prone to premature internal short-circuits. Yet, their remediation strategy has been entirely inadequate. By managing this through piecemeal, phased rollouts and limited VIN inclusion lists, they are leaving dangerous vehicles on the road until the point of failure. Drivers are effectively acting as crash test dummies, waiting for their engines to die in dangerous environments before GM acknowledges that their specific VIN was fitted with the defective supplier part.
Issue Description: The vehicle experienced a failure of the Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) system, resulting in a collapsed lifter. About 30 minutes after this started happening a warning lamp lit up. We drove the vehicle about 2 miles to a local auto parts store to get an initial computer diagnosis of the issue. The test resulted in a code of "P0304" which detected a cylinder #4 misfire and recommended a fuel injector replacement. We brought the vehicle to a local mechanic to get the issue further evaluated. After this evaluation, it was determined that the cylinder #4 misfire was related to a lifter failure. The mechanic explained that this situation could possibly have caused more damage, specifically to the camshaft, but that job was bigger than he was willing to take on. He recommended we get the vehicle towed to the dealership for further evaluation. He also informed us that this situation was common with the engine in this vehicle and GMC is aware of it. He directed us to some articles online that elaborated on the potential known issues related to the automatic fuel management (AFM) system and the related engine damage. The vehicle was towed to a local GMC dealership for evaluation. They found the failed cylinder #4 with associated lifter failure and damaged camshaft. We went forward with the repair at the dealership. We asked the dealership about the known engine issues with this vehicle. They acknowledged the widespread issues but informed us that our particular VIN has not been included in any recalls or safety notifications, so we were responsible for the repairs. The vehicle spent nearly 3 weeks at the dealership. One of the parts was on backorder due to a national shortage, which delayed the repair by about one week. That seems to imply that the parts involved in this repair are in high demand, which raises the question of this being a manufacturing/parts issue that may need to be investigated further.
I took my GMC Yukon in for a recall. We spoke to the GM Advisor prior to this and were told that our vehicle was not part of the engine recall because our VIN was not listed as part of it even though our vehicle had the same exact issues as described in the engine recall and was for the exact year/make/model of the engine. The dealer quoted us $14,896 to replace the engine. They stated they would submit a Goodwill claim to GMC to help discount the cost to repair/replace the engine. The dealer called back later that day and said GMC would be willing to cover 30% of the cost so our expense would be around $10,000. All this for a vehicle we've only driven for less than a year and a half. The vehicle went in for a routine oil change and has never had any issues prior to this. This happened suddenly without any sort of warning. To make matters worse, our powertrain warranty expired a day or two before this occurred. We are still trying to fight with GMC to cover this engine failure. The car has less than 75,000 miles and is only used for basic personal needs like driving to school and the store so it is shocking that the engine would suddenly fail like this and to make matters, the manufacturer refuses to take responsibility for it and to cover it under the recall even though there has been known widespread issues with this engine.
The contact owns a 2021 GMC Yukon XL. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The engine failed due to defective lifters and camshaft components, along with excessive oil consumption. These issues rendered the vehicle inoperable and required over $10,000 in repairs. The failed components are available for inspection upon request. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The engine failure occurred while the vehicle was in motion, creating a dangerous situation for my family and other drivers. Sudden loss of engine power could have led to a collision or left us stranded in unsafe conditions. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. The issue was diagnosed and confirmed by DeFouw GMC in Lafayette, Indiana. GMC has acknowledged the defect and agreed to cover all but $2,000 of the repair costs. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? The vehicle has been inspected by DeFouw GMC. GMC is aware of the issue under Case #[XXX]. No inspections have been conducted by police or insurance representatives. 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No, it all happened at once. The vehicle was extremely well cared for, and GM has all of the oil change records. We are now entering month four without a vehicle, which has severely impacted our family’s mobility and safety. Has also cost us over $10,000 out of pocket, which I will seek reimbursement for legally, if I must. Despite following the recommended maintenance schedule and driving under normal conditions, the engine failed prematurely. The vehicle has been out of service for over four months, and I have yet to receive a definitive resolution or timeline from General Motors. I have incurred over $13,000 in out-of-pocket costs, including towing, repair estimates, rental vehicles, and continued loan payments on a non-functional vehicle. Key Details: Vehicle: 2021 GMC Yukon Denali XL VIN: [XXX] Failure Type: Total engine failure requiring full rebuild or replacement Time Out of Service: 4+ months and ongoing Financial Impact: $13,335.58 in documented costs GM Defect Number: [XXX] (noted internally by GM) Dealer(s) Involved: Midas Auto Service, Beaman GMC (Nashville, TN) I have made repeated efforts to escalate this through GM’s Case Advisors and Executive Team, but have received no meaningful resolution or written acknowledgment of my request for either reimbursement or a good faith vehicle buyback. Given the safety implications of such a catastrophic failure in a relatively new vehicle, I believe this may represent a broader manufacturing defect or quality control issue and warrants NHTSA investigation. I respectfully request that NHTSA: Log this complaint into your safety database Investigate whether similar failures have occurred in other 2021 Yukon Denali XL vehicles Contact GM for further information regarding this defect and associated safety risk Thank you for your attention to this matter. This vehicle has exhibited multiple serious issues affecting safety, drivability, and reliability. 1. Engine Noise & Oil Consumption: Since purchase, the vehicle has had a persistent loud knocking/tapping sound, especially under acceleration. The engine also consumes an excessive amount of oil between scheduled oil changes, with no visible leaks. I reported this to the dealership multiple times, but since there is no active recall or TSB, they refused to diagnose or repair the issue under warranty. I have since learned that many other 2021 Yukon Denali owners with the same 6.2L engine are experiencing similar issues and some have had repairs or engine replacements covered by GM. I have received no such support. 2. Braking Problems: The vehicle has ongoing brake performance issues. Despite replacing the brake components multiple times, the brakes feel inconsistent and unsafe, especially during highway driving or sudden stops. There is vibration and uneven response, and the braking system does not inspire confidence. These problems have persisted despite attempts to correct them. 3. Suspension/Handling Concerns: The suspension feels unstable and loose, especially at highway speeds or when turning. Cars were swerving not to hit us as we coasted across three lanes. One car almost hit another car because they quickly tried to go around us because of our decreasing speed and made that car swerve into the other lane. We ended up only inches off the right lane. We had 2 teenagers and our 1 year old baby in the car with us in the Florida heat. Sitting in that car was truly traumatizing because every semi that passed us, the whole car was shaking because we were so close to the line. I just knew that someone was going to veer off inches and wipe us completely out. Because the engine just shut off, we barely made it off the road so cars were honking at us because they knew the danger we were in not being far enough off the shoulder. Then, he called me later in the day and said he was able to look at the vehicle and run diagnostics and said the engine had seized. My car is less than 4 years old and had 66k miles. I had it serviced right before our family road trip at 64k miles. We have been the only owners and have always serviced it through GMC Service Centers Only. *Note*We had complained multiple times of a squeaking/chirping noise coming from the engine. Since we first received it. The service center kept the vehicle a couple of times overnight to try and diagnose. We had to pay for a new belt replacement, and the squeaking/chirping noise was never resolved. We wonder if this was a preexisting issue.
We purchased our 2021 GMC Yukon used from a dealership 1 year ago with zero issues. 3 days ago out of no where there is a very loud squeaking sound in the front under the hood. I had it towed to the dealership, where I was informed that the fuse pack needed replacement. Less than 36 hours after getting my vehicle back, I experienced another critical failure—while driving, the traction control light and check engine light came on, and the engine began making a loud clacking noise. Upon returning it to the dealership, I was told that the vehicle required a complete engine replacement. Prior to this incident, my Yukon had no known mechanical issues. However, despite the vehicle being only three years old and under GMC’s 5-year/60,000-mile PowerTrain warranty, the failure occurred at 65,722 miles—just over the coverage limit. GMC has acknowledged nearly 900,000 reported issues related to this engine defect, yet instead of issuing a full recall, I was only offered 60% coverage, leaving me with over $5,000 in out-of-pocket costs for an issue that is clearly a widespread manufacturing defect. I purchased this vehicle for its reputation of reliability and safety, especially as the primary mode of transportation for my family of five, with no nearby relatives to rely on. Given the known defects, it is unacceptable that GMC has failed to take full responsibility. I am formally requesting that GMC cover the full cost of the engine replacement and issue a recall to prevent other consumers from experiencing the same failure. First incident was May 2, 2021 and second (after allegedly being fixed) was June 23, 2021.
VEHICLE HAS BEEN AT THE DEALER WITH GM INVOLVEMENT STARTING JANUARY 6TH AND IT HAS BEEN OUT OF THE REPAIR FACILITY FOR LESS THAN 2 WEEKS UP TO TODAY, 4/1/2021. THE VEHICLE HAS AN ADAPTIVE SUSPENSION SYSTEM THAT HAS NOT ONLY FAILED, BUT HAS CONTINUED TO FAIL AFTER MULTIPLE REPAIR ATTEMPTS. THERE SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE WITH THIS NEW ADAPTIVE SUSPENSION, SPECIFICALLY WHEN THE 'VEHICLE ACCESS' OPTION IS TOGGLED IN THE SETTINGS. THIS HAS CAUSED MULTIPLE SAFETY WARNINGS; 'VEHICLE TOO HIGH, DRIVE SLOWLY VEHICLE UNSAFE' AND 'VEHICLE TOO LOW, DRIVE SLOWLY, VEHICLE UNSAFE'. DEALER AND GM HAVE REPLACES MILLIE PARTS, SOFTWARE AND SENSORS, TO NO AVAIL. THE MAJOR CONCERN IS THAT MOST OWNERS DON'T REALIZE THE RISK AND THIS IS A FLAW IN THE DESIGN WHICH COULD LEAD TO ACCIDENTS. MY VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED IN AT THE LAST RESURGENCE BECAUSE IT WAS NOT IN AS STATE TO BE DRIVEN. THE SUSPENSION COLLAPSED AFTER HAVING 35 DAYS IN THE SHOP. IT SEEMS THAT THE SOFTWARE AND THE SYSTEM AREN'T PROPERLY FUNCTIONING/DESIGNED. THIS COULD BE ENDEMIC IN EVERY DENALI, OR OTHER GM VEHICLE WITH THIS SYSTEM, THAT ENABLES THE AUTOMOTIVE ACCESS (VEHICLE LOWERS WHEN IN PARK). THIS ISSUE OCCURRED WHILE PARKED AND WHILE DRIVING, BOTH LOCALLY AND HIGHWAY. THE SCARIEST WAS WHEN I WAS DRIVING TO THE DEALER AND THE SUSPENSION STARTED BOUNCING CAUSING ME TO GO NO MORE THAN 40MPH ON THE INTERSTATE TO THE DEALER.
I'VE OWNED OVER A DOZEN GM TRUCKS OVER THE LAST 20+ YEARS AND THIS MODEL IS THE WORST EVER! MY COMPLAINT: GM TOOK AWAY THE TURN SIGNAL LIGHTS ON THE SIDE MIRRORS. THE TURN SIGNAL INDICATORS ON THE DASH ARE TOO SMALL AND LOCATED WITH MANY OTHER LIGHTS/INDICATORS, SO THEY CANNOT BE SEEN QUICKLY NOR 'EASILY' AND CAN'T BE HEARD UNDER NORMAL TRAFFIC CONDITIONS. THIS CREATES AN INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS SITUATION WITH DRIVER DISTRACTION TRYING TO SEE IF A TURN SIGNAL HAS BEEN ACTIVATED AND INCREASES THE RISK OF VEHICLES NEXT TO THE TRUCK NOT EXPECTING A LANE CHANGE IF THEY ARE AHEAD OF THE TAIL LIGHTS. NUMEROUS TIMES OVER THE PAST FEW WEEKS I'VE OWNED THIS VEHICLE, I'VE ALMOST RUN INTO ADJACENT VEHICLES I COULDN'T 'SEE' BECAUSE THE BLIND SPOT WARNING SYSTEM DOES NOT DETECT VEHICLES WELL ENOUGH TO AVOID TURNING INTO THEM AND ALSO BECAUSE I WAS DISTRACTED TRYING TO SEE THE TURN INDICATOR ON THE DASHBOARD, OOK INTO THE SIDE MIRRORS AND WATCH MY DISTANCE TO CARS IN FRONT OF ME. THE TURN SIGNAL INDICATORS ON THE MIRRORS ON THE PRIOR MODEL SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED DRIVER DISTRACTIONS AND INCREASED SAFETY TO THE DRIVER, PASSENGERS AND ADJACENT VEHICLES. GM MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR REMOVING SAFETY FEATURES! THEY MUST BE FORCED TO REPLACE THE MIRRORS WITH ONES THAT HAVE TURN SIGNAL INDICATORS IN THEM LIKE ON PRIOR MODEL YEARS. IF IT'S NOT A SAFETY ISSUE, WHY DID THEY HAVE THE INDICATORS IN THE MIRRORS BEFORE?? REMOVING THE MIRROR SIGNAL LIGHTS WAS OBVIOUSLY A SICK WAY FOR GM TO SAVE A FEW DOLLARS WITH INTENDED DISREGARD FOR THE SAFETY OF IT'S OWNERS, PASSENGERS AND EVERYONE ELSE ON THE ROAD. THESE PROBLEMS EXIST WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STOPPED (BLIND SPOT ISSUES), TURNING, CHANGING LANES AND MOVING ON EVERY TYPE OF ROADWAY, BUT ESPECIALLY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WHERE HUNDREDS OF FEET ARE TRAVELED IN ONLY A FEW SECONDS, AND DISTRACTIONS BECOME EVEN MORE UNSAFE AND DANGEROUS TO EVERYONE.
GM CHANGED THE TRAVEL OF THE STEERING COLUMN SO NOW IT'S ONLY A FEW INCHES FROM THE DASHBOARD. IN PRIOR MODELS, THE STEERING WHEEL (SW) TRAVEL WAS MUCH MORE. DUE TO GM'S DESIRE TO SAVE MONEY AND COMPLETE DISREGARD FOR DRIVER, PASSENGER AND OTHER VEHICLES SAFETY, THE DRIVER HAS TO REACH OUT TO THE SW RESULTING AT DANGEROUS ELBOW ANGLES. IN PERFORMANCE CARS, THE SW IS DESIGNED TO BE CLOSE TO THE DRIVER BECAUSE PHYSICS PRINCIPLES OF TORQUE REVEAL: THE GREATER THE ANGLE OF REACH, THE MORE TORQUE IT REQUIRES TO TURN THE SW. SO REACHING OUT WITH THE ELBOW AT ZERO TO 10 DEGREES REQUIRES A MUCH LONGER REACH, THUS GREATER FORCE/TORQUE AND LONGER REACTION TIME, THAN HAVING THE SW AT A 30-40 DEGREE 'ELBOW BEND'. THE POINT IS, FOR A DRIVER TO TURN THE SW ON THIS VEHICLE, IT TAKES TOO MUCH STRENGTH AND TOO LONG A REACTION TIME TO SAFELY OPERATE IT. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS MODEL LIKE I DID WITH PRIOR MODEL YEARS. WITH THIS 'LAND YACHT' HAVING AN EVEN LONGER WHEELBASE THAN BEFORE, THE DISTANCE TO THE SW IS EVEN MORE CRITICAL IN REGARDS TO REACTION TIME AND SAFE DRIVING! PLUS, SINCE THE SW IS SO CLOSE TO THE DASHBOARD, WHEN I RAISE MY LEG TO STEP ON THE BRAKE PEDAL (WHICH NOW I HAVE TO DO BECAUSE GM ALSO TOOK AWAY THE FOOT PEDAL ADJUSTER!), MY LEG HITS THE BOTTOM OF THE SW! THE TIME IT NOW TAKES TO BRING A FOOT UP OVER THE BRAKE PEDAL, TO LOOK DOWN TO SEE IF YOUR LEG IS GOING TO HIT THE SW AND CAUSE THE SW TO EITHER STOP MOVING OR RE-DIRECT THE VEHICLE INTO AN UNPLANNED DIRECTION, ALL WHILE TRYING TO STOP THIS OVER 7,700 LB VEHICLE WITH MUSHIER BRAKES THAN ANY MODEL EVER, IS DANGEROUSLY LONG. THE OVERALL REACTION TIME TO GENERALLY STOP THIS MODEL IS AT LEAST 5 TIMES THAT OF MY 2018 YUKON XL DENALI. THE TRAVEL LENGTH OF THE SW NEEDS TO BE INCREASED 2-3 INCHES TO SAFELY OPERATE THIS TRUCK. THEN THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL LOWERED THE VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF. I WAS LEFT IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC UNABLE TO MOVE THE VEHICLE TO A SAFE LOCATION. NEUTRAL WOULD NOT WORK EITHER. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE GMC DEALERSHIP, THEY KNEW EXACTLY WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE CAR, BROKEN SPRINGS IN THE ENGINE. APPARENTLY THEY SENT A NOTICE STATING THAT THE ENGINE SPRINGS WERE BREAKING AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALERSHIP ONLY OFFERED TO REPLACE THE 2 BROKEN SPRINGS, NOT ALL OF THEM SINCE MY VEHICLE WAS BUILT AFTER THE DATE NOTED FOR HAVING ISSUES. THEY WOULD NOT PROVIDE ME WITH ANY PAPERWORK ABOUT THE SERVICE.
