That morning, I filled the vehicle with a little over 20 gallons of fuel at a gas station approximately two miles from my home. Later in the day, I made a short trip to my neighborhood swimming pool, roughly 1.5 miles round trip, with no unusual noises or warnings from the vehicle. Approximately two hours after returning home, I entered the vehicle to run an errand. When I shifted into reverse and began backing out of my carport, I immediately heard a scraping noise on the concrete. I stopped the vehicle and inspected underneath. At that point, I discovered that the entire fuel tank had fallen out of the vehicle and was resting on the ground. I contacted roadside assistance, and the vehicle was towed to the dealership. The dealership informed me that the fuel tank support straps were missing, which allowed the tank to detach and fall. I personally searched along all the routes I had driven earlier that day and did not locate any straps or debris. The tank itself showed no impact damage, suggesting it dropped cleanly rather than being torn loose by road contact. Although the vehicle is relatively new, my bumper to bumper warranty expired in September 2025, and I was charged for the repair. I have included photos taken before and during the tow, as well as the dealership’s invoice. I am extremely concerned about the safety implications of this failure. If the tank had fallen while I was driving at interstate speeds (approximately 70 mph), it could have caused a catastrophic fire hazard, loss of vehicle control, or danger to other motorists. I do not know how long the vehicle had been operating without fuel tank straps, nor why there were no warnings or indications of a structural issue. I also question why the dealership did not treat this as a manufacturing or assembly defect, given that fuel tank straps should not detach under normal use. ...RAN OUT OF CHARACTERS...
On a long trip the fuel tank straps and bolts holding the gas tank failed causing the fuel tank to fall and be dragged causing massive fuel spill. In June 2025, the vehicle again became inoperable without warning while parked at a store. It would not start despite repeated attempts, including by a dealership representative. There was no impact from road debris, no vehicles ahead, no overpass, and no external cause. The failure sounded like an explosion or gunshot. Tempered glass shattered with the sunroof in the closed position, showering the interior with glass fragments. Five occupants were in the vehicle at the time. No injuries occurred, but the sudden explosive noise and shower of glass created an extreme distraction and safety hazard while operating the vehicle at highway speed. The incident could easily have caused a loss of vehicle control on the interstate. The component that failed is the factory-installed panoramic power sunroof glass, standard equipment on the Denali Ultimate trim. The vehicle was taken to Lugoff Chevrolet for inspection. The dealer confirmed the glass failure and submitted a request to GM for warranty or goodwill coverage. GM offered to cover only 10% of the repair cost, characterizing the failure as an out-of-warranty wear issue despite the spontaneous nature of the defect. There were no warning signs, cracks, chips, warning lamps, or any indication of a problem prior to the failure. The sunroof was closed at the time. The vehicle has been dealer-maintained with no modifications to the sunroof or roof structure. This is a known industry-wide defect. NHTSA has previously investigated spontaneous sunroof shattering and documented over 4,000 complaints. GM has acknowledged awareness of this issue in other GM vehicles and previously issued corrective actions for sunroof glass on the Buick Regal and Chevrolet Cruze. Other GMC Yukon owners have filed NHTSA complaints describing identical failures. On January 10, 2026, at approximately 1:00 a.m., while traveling at highway speed (approximately 65+ mph) on a multi-lane highway, the engine suddenly failed without warning, resulting in a complete loss of power. I was forced to make immediate evasive maneuvers to reach the shoulder while avoiding semi-trucks and other vehicles. The sudden loss of power created an extremely dangerous situation for myself, my passengers, and surrounding traffic. After the engine failure, the vehicle could not be placed into neutral, preventing it from being moved out of traffic if it had stopped in an active lane. This design issue significantly increased the risk of a collision. I was stranded on the roadside for several hours in cold conditions awaiting a tow. The failure was later confirmed by an authorized GMC dealer, who diagnosed the engine as failed and replaced the entire engine assembly. The vehicle and replaced components should be available for inspection through the dealership. The manufacturer had previously issued a recall for this vehicle related to engine failure, and I had requested a buyback prior to this incident due to safety concerns. That request was denied unless the vehicle experienced a failure. There were no warning lamps, messages, or symptoms prior to the failure. There was no warning before the engine lost all power and propulsion. I was traveling in the left lane of the interstate in moderately heavy traffic. When the engine shut down, I only had steering and braking available to me. In addition to losing all propulsion, I also lost all electronics, and there was no shoulder. The complete dashboard shut down. The only reason there was not a collision was that the traffic around me could see what was happening and slowed down themselves. I coasted on through the onramp and found a shoulder where I had three lanes of traffic on my left and two lanes on my right. Less than two months before this incident, the vehicle had been inspected and serviced by an authorized GM dealer, and no engine issues were identified. I was given no indication that the engine was at elevated risk of failure. After the breakdown, GM and the dealer determined that the failure falls under GM Safety Recall N252494002 / NHTSA Campaign 25V274000, which involves internal engine defects in the 6.2L L87 that can cause a loss of propulsion in certain GM trucks and full‑size SUVs widely used as family vehicles. GM is replacing the engine, extending the warranty, and providing a loaner, but this does not change the fact that my family was exposed to a serious safety risk, nor does it address the possibility that other owners may experience sudden loss of propulsion even after their engines “pass” dealer inspection. I am submitting this complaint so NHTSA is aware that a recalled 6.2L L87 engine, inspected shortly beforehand, still failed without warning at highway speed in a primary family‑hauler vehicle, creating a dangerous situation. The engine lost functionality while the vehicle was in use, resulting in loss of propulsion and the vehicle becoming disabled, requiring towing. The engine is currently available for inspection and is awaiting major powertrain repair at an authorized dealership. The sudden engine failure created a safety risk due to unexpected loss of power while driving. No collision occurred. The issue has been confirmed by an authorized dealership. The vehicle had previously been inspected by the manufacturer as part of the recall process prior to the failure. Prior to the failure, there were no known warning lamps or messages indicating an imminent catastrophic failure. The failure occurred after the vehicle had passed the recall inspection. This appears to be a post-recall remedy failure. I am concerned that the recall inspection did not adequately prevent the known defect, as the engine failed after being certified as compliant.
I am writing to formally file a complaint regarding a serious and ongoing issue with my vehicle that has placed my safety at risk and resulted in significant inconvenience and financial burden due to General Motors’ failure to honor my warranty in a timely manner. While driving on the highway, my vehicle suddenly began losing power and displayed flashing warning messages indicating that it would not shift into gear or out of gear and that power could be lost. This created an extremely dangerous driving situation and posed a serious safety risk to me and other motorists. I brought the vehicle in for warranty service, but General Motors was unable to honor the warranty repair in a timely manner. As a result, I was without my vehicle for several months while it sat undrivable on the dealership lot. Once the vehicle was finally repaired and returned to me, the exact same transmission-related incident occurred again. Once again, I was left without the vehicle for an additional period of days. This repeat failure has severely shaken my confidence in the reliability and safety of the vehicle. When I picked up the vehicle after the subsequent repair, I was informed by a General Motors technician that the brakes and rotors were most likely pitted and damaged and would need repair or replacement because the vehicle had been sitting undrivable for such an extended period of time. I was explicitly told this damage was expected due to the prolonged inactivity caused by the unresolved warranty issue. It is critical to stress that the vehicle only sat undrivable for such a long period of time as a direct result of General Motors’ inability to honor the warranty in a timely manner. Despite this, I am now being told that the brake and rotor damage is considered a “maintenance issue,” even though a General Motors technician directly advised me that this damage would occur as a consequence of the vehicle sitting for months due to warranty delay
Engine oil level drops significantly well before the oil change interval. However, the issue has occurred again since that repair, indicating that either the original repair did not fully resolve the problem or there may be additional underlying causes. The battery terminals have been inspected for corrosion, and the connections are secure. [Include any other steps you’ve taken, e.g., "The battery was tested and confirmed to be in good condition."] Request for Assistance: Given the recurring nature of this issue and the fact that it has not been fully resolved despite multiple service visits, I would like to request the following: A more in-depth diagnostic to identify any additional root causes, including potential parasitic drains, alternator performance, or software-related issues. Confirmation of whether there are any recalls, technical service bulletins (TSBs), or known issues related to the electrical system or battery for this model. Consideration for extended warranty coverage or goodwill assistance to address this issue, as it appears to be related to a manufacturing defect. Summary of Violations 1. Misrepresentation of Vehicle Model Year I was sold a 2023 GMC Yukon Denali that the dealership falsely represented as a brand-new 2024 model, including on the key-tag. This violates Texas Occupations Code §2301.351(a) and DTPA §17.46(b)(5), (7), (24). 2. Unauthorized Add-Ons & Hidden Charges The dealership added 8,000 in accessories and 26,000 in warranty products without my consent. This violates DTPA §17.46(b)(12). 3. Financing Fraud I was promised 1% financing, but the dealership charged a significantly higher rate at closing without disclosure. This violates the Truth in Lending Act (TILA). 4. Warranty Refusal & Pre-Existing Damage Although the vehicle had defects and mechanical issues at delivery, the dealership refused to repair them under warranty unless I paid. This violates the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. 5. Failure to Provide Required Documentation The dealership refused to provide complete purchase documents, violating Texas Administrative Code §215.142. 6. Pattern of Evasion I personally visited the dealership three times, yet management refused to correct any misconduct. 7. Unsafe Vehicle Retained at Dealership The Yukon remains at the dealership due to mechanical/electrical defects. I refused to pick it up because the vehicle is unsafe and not as represented. My engine was impacted. It failed Sunday, [XXX]. I limped it to Mike Marroone dealership in Longmont, CO, on August 5th. That afternoon they confirmed my engine and various other components needed to be replaced. At this time GM was flooded with recalls and the whereabouts of all necessary parts were unknown and could not be tracked. It was so bad that the dealer could give no timeline as they had 5 vehicles waiting for engines. They also were replacing engines, and the replacement engine would fail immediately. Without notice, an engine and parts arrived after 3 painful weeks of sitting in the unknown. The vehicle was returned to me on August 23nd, 2024, 19 days after I dropped it off. During this time I was paying $977.50 for a car payment plus $130 for insurance per month. I had to pay this despite not having use of the vehicle for a recall that GM knew about but didn't do anything until it garnered national attention. The following is my response to the proposed warranty coverage for GM recall N25249400 and NHTSA recall 25V274: Based on the above information provided, I am requesting the 10 year warranty and 150,000 mile warranty be effective from the date the vehicle was returned to me on August 23rd, 2024. Additionally, I am requesting a check in the amount of $1,106.50 for payments directly associated with a vehicle that was not able to be used due to GM's failure. The recall explicitly indicates defects in the engine components (rods/cam shafts) that may lead to a loss of propulsion. Merely inspecting the vehicle and adding thicker oil does not resolve the underlying problem; it only postpones the inevitable expiration of my warranty. Currently, there are no warning lights illuminated, as the vehicle is not driven frequently. The recall raises significant concerns, and GM should be taking more substantial measures than simply applying thicker oil as a solution. On multiple occasions, while driving at high speeds on the freeway with our four young children, the vehicle unexpectedly lost power and shifted into neutral without warning. This occurred approximately four times on March 9, 2025, when we contacted OnStar for assistance. Despite their response indicating no alerts on their end, we were advised to reach out again if the issue persisted. Unfortunately, the problem did occur again on March 16th, which prompted us to contact OnStar and have the vehicle towed to the nearest dealership for further evaluation. The service department has since informed us that the motor requires replacement. Upon conducting additional research, it seems this may be a known issue with many vehicles manufactured by GM around the same time. After safely navigating through 5 o'clock traffic just outside of Atlanta, the vehicle would not turn over or even attempt to start back up. We contacted onstar for assistance and was advised to stay with the vehicle while they dispatched a tow truck. After approximately 2 hours we contacted onstar again and was advised a tow truck wouldn't be available until morning. We then were able to obtain a ride with Lyft that totaled over $100 with 5 people and was given a $50 credit. I was forced to use Hilton Honors points to book a hotel. Then after the next morning around 10am I was advised the tow truck was enroute to the car. I then took an Uber to Enterprise where I was able to get a rental vehicle. And made my way to the dealership that our Yukon was towed to. After speaking with the service advisor I was told they wouldn't even have a diagnosis for a couple weeks. So we proceeded to head home (with the rental breaking down and several other issues we had to overcome). After we were able to get another rental vehicle, we made it home around 2am. We returned this rental vehicle as it was not suitable for our family, and contacted GM in hopes to get a rental vehicle while our $120k vehicle is sitting in the parking lot of a dealership 8 hours from our home. Only to be told they'd allow $44/day for a rental and we would need to rent it initially and they would reimburse us after we submitted our receipts. Unfortunately $44/day does not get us anything that can accommodate our family and finances are not allowing for this at this time. So we are managing with 1 car. On 1/9, we received a call from the dealership stating our engine was locked up, non repairable and they were waiting for guidance from GM. Then on 1/23 I was then advised by my GM rep that she was transferring the case to someone else and they would advise when the new engine has shipped. This concern is especially troubling when compared to my similar gas-fueled vehicle from the same manufacturer, which exhibits notably superior braking performance. After discussing this matter with the service center, their response was that the braking performance is considered normal for my diesel vehicle. However, the evident disparity in braking effectiveness between my diesel vehicle and the gas-fueled one suggests otherwise. Specifically, when maneuvering in a parking lot at low speeds (below 5mph) and allowing the wheel to return to center by spinning in your hands, the cruise control switch which is a dial/lever that sticks out beyond the surface of the wheel, catches on your hand and engages the cruise. This sets the cruise control target speed to a 15 MPH even if you are currently going slower than that. The vehicle then accelerates on its own at a fairly aggressive pace to get up to 15mph. You can of course hit the brakes and cancel the cruise control, but in a tight parking lot scenario this unintended acceleration could easily cause you to strike another vehicle, obstacle, or pedestrian. The cruise control on this vehicle is enabled by default on start up and the single action of hitting the set switch/dial engages the cruise and accelerates sharply even if you had not previously used cruise in that ignition cycle. This seems like a stupid design and dangerous, and would be very easy to fix with a software update to not let the cruise become enabled below 15mph. We did not have the dealer investigate because this appears to be the normal operation of the cruise control system. There were no unusual warning lamps. GM Customer Service also never followed up on my issue even after calling and emailing them several times, which again calls into question how General Motors operates their business.
The contact owns a 2023 GMC Yukon XL.
