This is a significant safety concern, as if this were to happen in stop-and-go traffic on a highway, the car would be unable to accelerate to highway speeds.  On 6/20/26, I took the car to Lia Honda in Brewster, NY for diagnosis. They reported a failed Electric Power Steering Control Unit/Steering Rack (trouble code U0420-68). They explained that this single electrical component failure also caused all other components to report failures because they are connected in a ring. Estimated repair cost $4,595.98.  I have filed a complaint with Honda to request out-of-warranty coverage. Car is \u22483 years old, 3 months out of warranty, and only lightly used at 17,484 miles.   Note that this car falls under NHTSA recall 24V-744, which pertains to a manufacturing defect in the worm gear of the Electric Power Steering.  We had the recall service completed on 12/26/24, but it seems possible that continued friction in the worm gear may result in overloading of the EPS control unit.  Other Honda CR-V owners have reported similar issues online, so this does not appear to be an isolated incident. The dealer's service manager and mechanic foreman and a private mechanic all inspected the tires and confirmed the uneven wear.  The first symptom was a wump-wump noise and vibration when driving slow, slowing down or making a turn. Problem first appeared around 11,000 miles. Now the problem appears worse. In that the initial noise and vibration is worse and now there is a chattering sound and vibration in highway drive. Plus an occasional \"shimmy sensation\" when a bump or rough patch in the road is gone over.  New development. Since the onset of this problem. Honda has come out with a recall notice regarding an issue with their steering gearbox worm wheel for the car model involved. A Technical service bulletin was issued on the steering problem, with a note that this problem can lead to uneven tire wear. Despite this warning, the service manager for the dealer is insisting that it is safe to drive on cupped tires. I have since taken my car into the dealer to have the recall issue addressed. But again the service manager is insisting that driving on cupped tires is safe.  I think this is a potentially danger situation where customers are being told by the Honda dealer that it is safe to continue to drive on cupped tires.  I think that the NHTSA needs to require Honda corporation to order all Honda dealers to cover any uneven tire wear from the faulty steering gearbox defect. I just ordered a set of new tires for my safety at a cost of about $1000. So I got an oil change that was due and moved on, thinking it might go away on its own. I wrote the car up again at the same dealership on {XXX}, 2024 at 24,656 miles, and this time they were able to reproduce the problem and wrote it up properly. It has now been nearly three months since then, and the part (steering rack assembly and gearbox) has been on backorder with indeterminate ETA. As of this writing, the car has about 32K miles on it, and I continue to have to drive this car with faulty steering. The steering wheel initially began to develop a tendency to remain centered requiring additional effort to initiate a turn.  Once turning it felt normal.  Over time the problem became worse, and the wheel began to stick when turning as well.  At 6500 miles there is a noticeable resistance to initiating turns, or centering the wheel from a turn.  Turns to the right tend to stick more than turns to the left.  It is to the point now that in moderate turns you can let go of the steering wheel and it will remain in a turn.  A slight knocking noise has also developed.  When driving straight down the road it is extremely difficult to keep the vehicle centered in the lane.  The effort required increases with speed and narrower lanes.  Often the small corrections that would be normal for keeping a vehicle centered in a lane are not possible.  The sticking tendency is significant enough now even the smallest corrections meant to stay centered in a lane result in the car darting back and forth.  This is independent of the lane keeping system, it happens with the system on and off.  With the system on, the lane keeping system appears to struggle as well.  At approximately 6500 miles the car went to the dealer, and it as quickly diagnosed as being in need of a new steering rack.  The service center said it would be more annoying than unsafe and did not see the need to keep the car.  The part was supposed to be ordered by the service center but we were told it was on backorder with no ETA.  The vehicle has approximately 6800 miles now and the issue is continuing to get worse and the vehicle can be difficult to handle in dense traffic with narrow lanes.  The primary concern is how much worse will it get, and will the steering rack ultimately fail. My husband which is a police officer has driven the car as well and has also noticed the issue and he believes it has gotten worse. Then, when you need to adjust it a bit more to stay on the road, it feels like there's a momentary increase in resistance, almost as if the steering briefly \"sticks\" and then returns to its usual firmness. It's as if the steering wheel gets stuck in a groove during the gentle turn, and the resistance doesn't have a smooth feel when you're trying to adjust further into or out of the turn. If I were to make an educated guess, it could be related to one of the safety systems integrated into the steering mechanism. It was parked in our car port.  Everything seemed to be normal until the car was placed in reverse (R).  Pressure on the gas pedal produced no response.  Putting the car in drive (D) also produced no response.  All the settings seemed normal, no brake lock engaged etc.  Powering the car off and then back on did not improve the situation until about the third attempt, when spontaneously the car resumed normal functions.  The safety risk is that there are times when in an emergency, one must reverse the car out of an intersection to avoid a collision, or otherwise move backward, for example to allow an emergency vehicle to cross lanes.  If the car suddenly becomes immobile, there are many situations in which this could be dangerous.  Just knowing that the transmission is unreliable is a great concern.  We are making an appointment with the dealer for a routine oil change, and will report the issue to him at that time.  The auto has also had one recall which was attended by the dealer.  Also, a similar problem was reported on a website involving a 2021 CRV.
