It is subject to Safety Recall 44A/NHTSA 23V-301 involving the 62TE transmission. Before going to Ram, an independent repair facility removed the transmission pan and documented burnt fluid and substantial metallic debris/shavings. The van was then TOWED to an authorized Ram dealer specifically because of the transmission failure and recall. Importantly, the PCM software update had NOT been performed before the failure. Ram performed the update only AFTER the transmission had already failed and metal had been documented. FCA originally identified the software update as an INTERIM repair that did not complete the recall. The current remedy includes PCM updating AND inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the transmission/components. I informed the service manager of the documented metal and offered the independent shop's findings. He said he would not accept the finding because he had not personally inspected it, yet refused to further evaluate the transmission under the recall unless I authorized approximately $500 in customer-paid diagnosis. He repeatedly complained that Stellantis only pays approximately 1/2 hour for the recall. After updating the PCM, the dealer drove the van approximately one mile. The manager acknowledged a transmission issue and abnormal noise and suggested it “may be a pump,” but still did not inspect the documented internal debris. He stated that because the van still moves in reverse, transmission replacement is not warranted under the recall. I was instructed to retrieve the vehicle with the transmission issue unresolved. I have also opened a case with Ram/Stellantis. I request NHTSA review whether Recall 44A was properly completed when the transmission had already failed before the software update, metallic debris was documented, and the dealer declined further recall evaluation without customer-paid diagnosis.
The fuel tank is leaking where the fuel tube goes into the tank. It sounded like it was coming from the wheels or undercarriage. There were no dash warning lights, alarms, or any other indicator of a serious issue. I drove the van around town for a few days approximately 30 miles. The van is heavy and I live in a hilly area, so I use the parking brake fairly often. I applied the parking brake within that week on an incline, and when I released the parking brake and drove forward, the squeak was louder then ever, so much so, people stared. There were no error or warning message on the dash or elsewhere. The parking brake indicator had come on normally while engaged and went off when it was released. I drove it directly to the local Ram dealer, as it seemed worse, hoping it was just in need of minor lubrication. It had just been serviced at the same dealer a few months earlier and I was told "it was like new with its low 12,500 miles". I explained the new noise and that I didn't want to cause damage by driving it, although there were no warning lights on. My van is still under the original warranty for a few more months. Even though they were booked, an employee went out and felt by the rear driver's side wheel and said it was really hot and likely a frozen brake caliper. They were able to fit me in and discovered the parking brake was frozen, which was causing the noise. They ordered the parts to repair, disengaged the parking brake, and said it was safe to drive as the main brakes were a separate system. They said not to apply the parking brake again as it would hang up as before. -The dealer ordered the parts over a month ago, but said the brake parts are not only on back order, but with no estimated shipping date, meaning they aren't even manufacturing them. -I am driving without a parking brake in a heavy vehicle in a hilly area with no pending solution and heading into winter weather. I recently went in for the 2nd recall and after completing it, the awning failed when the shop was testing it after completing the recall. Recall letter arrived on April 8th and called my dealer (McLain’s in Denton) on April 9th, and they ordered parts. They texted on June 13th to say the parts had arrived. I called and scheduled the first slot. I arrived on Jun 24th at 9am. By early afternoon, the lead tech came to visit me and said this recall was very complicated, and it appeared it would not be complete that day. My wife drove the 80+ mile round trip to pick me up that afternoon. On Tuesday (6/25) about mid-day they called and said they were done, but when testing it, the awning shot out at high speed. They said the wedge had been installed, which was supposed to prevent this issue, so I don’t understand how it failed. They said there were ordering a new motor. I sent emails to both Winnebago and Carefree to alert them to this failure and ask that they investigate how this recall did not solve the issue of awning deployment from a broken gear. Winnebago responded, "We would recommend McClain's review this issue with our tech support. If the awning recall is done properly, this should not happen. The recall remedy has been thoroughly tested and approved by NHTSA.” I replied to them and ask them to reach out to McClain’s and do a thorough investigation. On Wednesday (6/26), I checked with McLain’s, and they said they were still waiting for Winnebago to approve the replacement motor. Friday (6/28). I got a text at 9am saying the part arrived. Carefree did respond and said they would need a photo of the wedge installation to make sure it was done correctly. Winn and Carefree should be taking this more seriously and investigating. They completed it and I picked it up on Sat (6/29). It is working, but I have no confidence they fixed the root issue.
The blind spot monitoring function frequently disables while driving this vehicle. This issue seems to primarily affect 2021 Ram Promaster vans. There are many posts in the ram promaster online forum about it @ [XXX] . Went to local Dodge dealer on July 11, 2022 to have them look at the Blind spot monitor and other items, see attached document item #3. I then learned from the Dodge Promaster Forum that many other owners had the same problem with the blind spot monitor would get disabled while driving with Promaster vans going back to 2016 at least. The Dodge technician could not diagnose the problem due to the original radio being replaced by the Jayco RV company, he could not see the signal from the computer to the blind spot sensors see note in item #3 from Rainier Dodge. I took the RV into the dealership that I purchased the RV from Valley RV Supercenter in Kent, WA on August 17, 2022. The technician there showed me how to activate the blind spot monitor system through the installed radio, but we were not able to verify it was working in the deal's lot. So it was agreed that I would verify that it was working on the drive home. Got on the road and it was working great, but while driving south on I-5 I hit some traffic and while driving in traffic I witnessed the system turning itself off in heavy traffic when it was most important to have it on. It made making lane changes in traffic more difficult and more dangerous. Could not turn on the system again while the vehicle was moving. I believe that repeated hitting the brakes turned the system off. I had to pull off the interstate and stop to turn on the blind spot monitor again. The issue is that the steering is horribly sensitive, meaning that if you move the steering wheel even a tiny bit the vehicle moves a lot. It is similar to the old days of those short wheelbase Jeeps and you hear of people complaining in about steering themselves off the road. I also own a short vehicle being a Volvo XC60 but that is fine compared to this. The safety issue here, is that if a driver is not as experienced and takes their eyes off the road even for an instance that any normal reaction to the steering wheel could be deadly. I am older, in my 50’s with a a lot of experience driving and even I am nervous about this, to the point that if I sneezed I would worry about a slight movement pushing me off the road or into oncoming traffic. My question is, is there oversight on standards for a minimum amount of steering per how it affects the vehicle? I have talked with other owners of same vehicle, but they have the longer wheelbase, they have no issues, so it leads me to wonder if Ram uses the same steering on all vans, which would explain the problem, as there needs to be different steering for a very short wheelbase like mine vs a longer wheelbase vehicle. It is so bad that I will not let any of my 3 daughters drive this van. Also, when I first purchased this van new, I did reach out to Ram about this and never heard any reply, this is unacceptable. My plan going forward is to sell this van, as I recently drove a standard length Ford Transit and it drove so much safer than mine!! My hope in this email, is that the Board investigates this for safety issues, I certainly hope that no lives have been lost, and if my email can save anyone somewhere then that is a mission accomplished; And if anyone at Ram know about this and didn’t do anything then they are liable.
When driving on the expressway at highway speeds in this 2021 Ram 2500, the side mirrors started to vibrate and folded/slammed into the vehicle. Thor Motor Coach customer care recommended that I not drive the vehicle due to the safety recall, so in addition to the low clearance generator/batteries, and bottoming out issue that I've reported to NHTSA, the vehicle is not in safe driving condition and therefore remains in my driveway.
