The vehicle was taken to a service center, where technicians found multiple loss-of-communication codes involving the electronic power steering system. Further inspection found the main electronic power steering connector full of water and corroded. The technician documented that water intrusion caused excessive damage to the electronic power steering terminals at the rack-and-pinion assembly. The water intrusion appears consistent with a failure or inadequacy of the sealing intended to protect the electronic power steering connection from moisture. Due to the extent of the corrosion and damage, the affected wiring harnesses and rack-and-pinion assembly had to be replaced, followed by a wheel alignment. This failure resulted in a sudden loss of power steering assist while the vehicle was being driven.","products":[{"type":"Vehicle","productYear":"2023","productMake":"RAM","productModel":"PROMASTER","manufacturer":"Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)"}]},{"odiNumber":11750236,"manufacturer":"Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)","crash":false,"fire":false,"numberOfInjuries":0,"numberOfDeaths":0,"dateOfIncident":"06/22/2026","dateComplaintFiled":"07/14/2026","vin":"3C6LRVDG3PE","components":"ENGINE","summary":"While operating a 2023 Ram ProMaster 2500 (3.6L V6) for normal commercial use at approximately 39,129 miles, the coolant began bubbling and engine temperature spiked suddenly while driving. The vehicle was immediately parked and towed to an authorized Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram dealership as it was completely undrivable. This created a serious safety risk as the vehicle lost drivability suddenly on public roads during active commercial operation. Upon teardown the authorized dealer documented: coolant leaking into cylinders 3 and 4, coolant coming out of exhaust, stretched engine bolts, warped block and head, and internal coolant leak causing overheat. No external leaks from the cooling system were found. The internal component failures caused the overheating not the reverse. The vehicle was still within its active powertrain warranty at time of failure. Stellantis denied the warranty claim under TSB D-23-20 claiming an undetermined overheat caused the engine failure directly contradicting their own dealer's findings which show zero external cause. I have paid $9,000 out of pocket for repairs that should be covered under active powertrain warranty on a 3-year-old vehicle under 40,000 miles. The dealer's service department informed us that the issue was caused by water and corrosion in the electric power steering rack. They also indicated that this is a known issue, suggesting that the wiring harness seals are failing and allowing water to damage the system. Video the dealership sent us of the issue can be seen at [XXX] Repair Timeline: On July 30, 2025 I was informed that the replacement part for the steering rack was on backorder for approximately 45 days. After waiting 56 days, I contacted the dealer again on September 25. They informed me that they were unable to get the part. The dealer stated they could not locate the part even after contacting other dealerships, suggesting a widespread shortage. The reason given was a high volume of similar repairs. Requested Action: I am reporting this to the NHTSA because the sudden loss of steering is a severe safety defect. The widespread parts shortage suggests this is a common failure. They are very over bearing, make breathing difficult and of course they are flammable. I've taken it to the dealership 4 times now over the past year. The first 3 times they've said they can't replicate it and they don't smell anything. One dealership did try replacing the evap canister and fuel tank pressure sensor but this did not fix the issue. Eventually I determined the source of the fumes myself. They are back flowing from the leak detection pump filter and I even have this on video. The 4th time I took the van back, showed them the video and raised a fuss so they gave me a brand new 2025 to borrow while they try to fix my work van. Well sure enough I have caught the 2025 loaner doing the same thing and I also have it on video and have a witness. This leads to me to believe this is a factory design flaw with the Ram Promaster vans. They are supposedly submitting this to their engineering department but I do not want this getting swept under the rug. If you look up emissions recall UB4 it appears they have had this issue for years but never truly fixed it. I have experienced different issues with this vehicle. The turn indicator failure first started around 8000 miles. The door ajar light for the sliding door started around 35000 miles. What I believe is the traction control, has been an ongoing issue unsure of when it started, but is the most common issue. 1) Multiple times, the left turn signal randomly fails, the bulb indicator light turns on. The front left and mirror signal don't work. While the rear one does. Then out of nowhere, it starts to work again. Has happened multiple times. 2) multiple times right side sliding door sensor fails. Can be up to 2 hours after driving, the door ajar symbol comes on. Making the user interface unusable. Stop the van, open and close the door, it clears it. Then shortly later, the door ajar indicator comes on. And with the door ajar light illuminated, it does not allow the doors to be locked. 3) the traction control (i believe), on one side or the other, will grab, making a grinding noise, slow the vehicle down slightly and pull it slightly in that direction. It happens on any surface type, dry, wet, or icy. And happens at highway speeds, 50-80 mph. I've notice it happen a quite a few times when passing another vehicle.
