TECHNICAL EVIDENCE: A non-invasive borescope inspection of the cylinders has confirmed the presence of metallic \"silver chunks\" (sheared bolt heads) and \"half-moon\" impact marks on the piston crowns, indicating a total timing failure and internal mechanical collision (piston-to-valve contact).  REQUIRED REMEDY: This incident is a direct manifestation of the safety risk documented in Recall 23V-707. The vehicle was towed to an independent BMW-only repair shop in Pittsburgh. Their initial assessment indicated a high likelihood that the failure involved the VANOS assembly bolts, though the engine was not disassembled at that time, so the diagnosis could not be confirmed with certainty. Because the shop did not have immediate availability, we were asked to transport the car home until they could perform a full repair. After sitting for several weeks, the car was towed back for further inspection, at which point the shop discovered that a VANOS bolt had likely sheared off and caused irreparable damage to the engine. Our only options now are to replace the engine or scrap the vehicle.  The vehicle remains in Pittsburgh, PA in our possession and is available for inspection upon request. At this time, the failure has not been reproduced or confirmed by a BMW dealer, nor has it been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. Importantly, there is an existing recall on VANOS bolts for the 328xi station wagon, but our vehicle\u2019s production date ([XXX]) falls just outside the recall window of October 1, 2009\u2013August 4, 2011. Notably, for the sedan body model, the recall window was extended until December 6, 2011. In early June 2025, I contacted my local BMW dealership about an overheat notification I received while driving. They confirmed there was an open recall on the vehicle for a water pump connector (Recall 24V-608). I had the vehicle towed to their location. They sent me a video walkaround that characterized everything looked good, except the water pump connector which had failed.   Several days later, I was informed the recall repair had been completed but when they plugged in the new water pump connector, the DME shorted and they had to unhook the battery. Despite my best attempts to get this consequential damage covered as part of the recall work, BMW refused. I was told I had to come pick up the car as-is or pay for repairs.   When I looked into the issue further online, I learned that if I had chosen to pick up the car, hook up the battery and attempt to start and drive it, I could have found myself stuck inside the car (electronic locks) with a DME that literally caused the whole car to start on fire. Thank goodness I didn't go that route.  After further investigation into the recall issue (24v-608), I have learned the entire basis of the recall was risk of a \"thermal event\" caused as a result the faulty water pump connector shorting out. BMW never denied this when I brought it up. It is infuriating that BMW is suggesting the DME shorting out is not related to or covered by the water pump recall issue. A risk of thermal event is stated in the recall notice, and the DME literally shorted out DURING the recall repair work. They quoted me something like $5,000-7,000 to have the car drivable again. I was told by my BMW dealer that certain model and year BMW has this issue and it is well know. But I do see BMW issuing to its customers  or doing anything. If the car just stops without any warning to pull over etc. while  you are driving is very serious is VERY SERIOUS and LIFE- THREATENING ISSUE .  Imagine one is driving at 70 miles an hour on a busy freeway and car abruptly stops ( like  my car did  , twice in last 11 months, thank god not on freeway though) and there are several cars behind you driving at more or less at same speed; this will result in multi cars collision and multiple accidents and deaths. I had the vehicle towed to BMW.   Upon speaking to BMW today, I was told that the cause of failure was a timing chain malfunction/break which renders the engine inoperative.  The cost of a replacement is approx 15k-17k I was told.  At no time did I get any indication or warning that something was wrong with the car.  The car had been running fine until this incident, now I'm without a car and have to make a tough decision because of it. HOWEVER, THEY COULD NOT FIGURE OUT HOW I WAS DRIVING IT PERFECTLY FINE BEFORE STORING IT FOR WINTER, AND HOW 3 BOLTS WAS ALREADY MISSING AND THE LAST BOLT WAS CORRODING AND EVENTUALLY FELL OFF.  NICE, NOT A MECHANICAL ISSUE SO NOT BMW'S RESPONSIBILITY.    THIS MEANS I WAS DRIVING THE CAR WITH 1 BOLT HOLDING THE STEERING RACK TO THE MOTOR FOR AN UNKNOWN PERIOD OF TIME.  THE CAR GAVE NO WARNINGS WHATSOEVER AND I AM LUCKY THAT THE LAST AND FINAL BOLT HELD TOGETHER UNTIL THE CAR WAS NOT BEING DRIVEN.  IF THE LAST BOLT GAVE UP WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS MOVING, THEN I MAY NOT HAVE BEEN SO LUCKY.  WHY WOULD AN IMPACT THAT STRONG, AS DESCRIBED BY THE BMW TECHNICIAN, NOT FULLY RIP APART THE BOLTS?  WHY WAS I ABLE TO DRIVE NORMALLY FOR WEEKS WITHOUT ISSUES?  HOW DID IT NOT CAUSE ANY OTHER ISSUES AROUND THE WHEEL OR SUSPENSION AND ONLY 4 SECLUDED BOLTS WERE AFFECTED?  WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF ALL THE BOLTS GAVE UP WHILE THE CAR WAS BEING DRIVEN?  HOW DOES A BMW CANNOT WITHSTAND NORMAL IMPACT WITH ITS FINE GERMAN ENGINEERING?     FORD HAD RECENTLY RECALLED ALMOST 1 MILLION VEHICLES BECAUSE THEIR BOLTS WERE FAULTY AND WOULD CORRODE UNDER WATER/SNOW WITH SALT.  TESLA DID THE SAME RECALL EARLIER THIS YEAR. HOWEVER ON THE DRIVE HOME AT NIGHT, THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY SHUT OFF ON THE HIGHWAY AT SPEED. I HAD NO LIGHTS, NO HORN, NO BRAKES, NO POWER WHATSOEVER. THIS APPARENTLY IS WHAT BMW CONSIDERS 'SAFE'. I HAD TO PAY TO TOW THE CAR BACK TO TOWNE BMW, AS THE SERVICE MANAGER DID NOT SEEM TO CARE THAT THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING. A FEW DAYS LATER TOWNE BMW INDICATED THE VEHICLE WAS ONCE AGAIN 'SAFE TO DRIVE'. AFTER PICKING UP THE VEHICLE, WITHIN A FEW DAYS THE ENGINE STARTED SMOKING AGAIN AND SMOKE BEGAN TO FILL THE CABIN, IN ADDITION TO NOISES BEING EMITTED FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AREA. I CALLED TOWNE BMW ON AVERAGE TWICE A DAY LEAVING VOICEMAILS AS WELL AS MY CONTACT INFORMATION, AND RECEIVED NO RESPONSE WHATSOEVER. AFTER MY SECOND CALL TO BMW CORPORATE TO COMPLAIN I FINALLY RECEIVED A CALL BACK FROM BMW AFTER NEARLY A WEEK OF PHONE CALLS. I SUPPOSE THE SAFETY OF VEHICLES OR PROPER SERVICE ARE NOT BMW CORE VALUES. AFTER AN HOUR, THE TOW TRUCK CAME BUT COULD NOT HOOK US UP BECAUSE OF THE POSITION WE WERE IN AND CARS COMING IN SO FAST. THE TOW TRUCK HAD TO CALL THE CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL FOR HELP. SO WE WERE LEFT AGAIN (TOW TRUCK HAD TO GO BACK TO WAIT FOR THE CHP). THIS WAS A VERY SCARY SITUATION (WE HAD TO LEAVE THE CAR TO AVOID BEING HIT BY THE FAST, INCOMING VEHICLES). THE CAR WAS THEN TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP IN CHICAGO AND AFTER TWO DAYS THEY SAID THE FUEL PUMP BROKE/BURNED OUT AND HAVE TO BE REPLACED AND WILL TAKE 3-4 DAYS TO FIX IT.  NOTE THAT THE CAR IS LESS THAN TWO YEARS OLD, UNDER FULL WARRANTY AND AT AROUND 30800 MILES.  ALSO NOTE THAT THE SCHEDULED 30,000 MILE SERVICE WAS DONE THE DAY BEFORE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED AND THE CAR WAS INSPECTED AND CLEARED FOR ANY ISSUES/PROBLEMS.   AN INCIDENT LIKE THIS CAN BE DANGEROUS IF THE VEHICLE STOPS LIKE THAT ON A HIGHWAY OR A BUSY ROAD WITH NO APPARENT SIGNS.  AFTER THIS INCIDENT I LOST CONFIDENCE IN THE VEHICLE AND ALSO DO NOT WANT SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPEN TO ANYBODY ELSE.  I WOULD LIKE THE COMPANY/MANUFACTURER TO TAKE SERIOUS NOTE OF THIS INCIDENT SO THAT IT DOES NOT HAPPEN TO ANYBODY ELSE. AFTER THE REPAIR WAS DONE, THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT WAS NO LONGER ON, BUT THE CAR CONTINUED TO EXPERIENCE ENGINE IDLE SURGES, BUT THEY WERE NOT AS ABRUPT AND SIGNIFICANT AS BEFORE THE REPAIR AND A LOT LESS FREQUENT.  HOWEVER, IN JULY, 2014 THE CAR STARTED TO EXPERIENCE ISSUES RELATING TO THE ENGINE OVERHEATING, AND THE ENGINE BEGAN TO HAVE FREQUENT AND SUDDEN SURGES BOTH WHILE AT IDLE AND WHILE DRIVING.  IN ADDITION, THE CAR'S A/C WAS NO LONGER PROVIDING COLD AIR, AND THE CAR'S PERFORMANCE WAS ERRATIC.  WHEN MAX COOL WAS ENGAGED, THE CAR'S ENGINE WOULD SURGE LOUDLY UNTIL THE A/C WAS TURNED OFF.  THE CAR BECAME INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT TO STEER AND DRIVE. FIRST THE COOLANT WARNING, THEN WARNING TELLING ME TO DRIVE MODERATELY, THEN PULL OVER IMMEDIATELY ENGINE OVERHEATING. I PULLED THE CAR OVER, STOPPED THE ENGINE ALLOWING IT TO COOL DOWN, AND STARTING IT BACK UP, THE CAR WOULD NOT GO OVER 17 MPH. I CONTACTED WEBER BMW FOR ANOTHER SERVICE SCHEDULED FOR 4/30/13. A REPRESENTATIVE FROM WEBER BMW CONTACTED ME ON 4/29/13 AND INFORMED ME LOUIE ADVISED I CASUALLY STOP BY TO TOP OFF MY COOLANT,' AND THAT SHOULD RESOLVE MY PROBLEMS. I FOUND THIS RESOLUTION SKEPTICAL, LAZY, AND KNEW IT WOULD NOT BE ADEQUATE TO RESOLVE THE ISSUES WITH MY CAR. I STOPPED BY WEBER ON 4/29/13 AND THE SERVICE ADVISER ATTEMPTED TO 'TOP OFF MY COOLANT, WHEN WE BOTH NOTICED THE COOLANT SPILLING OUT OF THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ENGINE (I EMPHASIZE SPILLING AND NOT LEAKING). I WAS ADVISED NOT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. LOUIE CALLED ME ON 4/30/13 TO REPORTED A HOLE IN THE PART THAT WAS REPLACED PER THE RECALL CAUSING THE COOLANT TO SPILL OUT. HE LET ME KNOW THAT THE CAR WOULD BE READY NEXT DAY 5/1/13 FOR PICK UP.   I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE ANY LONGER. BMW STATES THAT THE AIRBAG SYSTEM IS/WAS WORKING PROPERLY (I.E. - BMW ASSERTS THE AIRBAG SYSTEM SHOULD NOT HAVE DEPLOYED IN THIS SITUATION).      DRIVER'S COMPLAINT IS THAT AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT WOULD HAVE PROTECTED HER AND PREVENTED SAID INJURIES.  THUS, EITHER THE AIRBAG MALFUNTIONED AND FAILED TO DEPLOY, OR IT IS DESIGNED IMPROPERLY.
