Component/System Failed: The timing chain guides and oil pump drive chain module failed. The plastic timing chain guide broke apart inside the engine. The vehicle was salvaged and is no longer available for inspection.  Safety Risk: The oil pressure warning illuminated suddenly while driving at highway speed with no prior warning. Sudden loss of oil pressure and engine power while operating a vehicle at speed creates a significant risk of accident, loss of vehicle control, and injury to the driver and others on the road.  Confirmed by Service Center: BMW of Springfield, New Jersey performed a formal diagnostic confirming timing chain guide failure and oil pump drive chain failure. A BMW mechanic performed a scope inspection on April 3, 2026 visually confirming the broken plastic timing chain guide. Repair estimate: 7,191.42.  Inspected by Others: The vehicle was inspected solely by BMW of Springfield. No police, insurance, or manufacturer representatives conducted a separate inspection. The failure mode is consistent with the defect acknowledged in BMW NA Technical Service Bulletin SI B11 03 17 and federal class action [XXX] v. BMW of North America, LLC (D.N.J. [XXX]).  Warning Symptoms: The only warning was a sudden oil pressure warning message on the dashboard immediately before failure. Prior to that moment the vehicle operated normally with no unusual noises, no warning lights, and no fluid leaks. There were no gradual symptoms or prior indications of impending failure.  Vehicle was declared a total economic loss and salvaged for 1,650.00. No injuries occurred. Responding police and fire personnel identified the vehicle itself as the source of the fire, with ignition originating in the engine bay. The building\u2019s fire sprinkler system activated, and residents were evacuated due to smoke and fire conditions. No injuries occurred, but the incident posed a serious risk to life and property due to the residential setting.  The vehicle was a total loss. While the exact technical cause of ignition could not be determined at the scene, first responders confirmed that the fire originated within the vehicle\u2019s engine compartment.  BMW of North America was notified of the incident and represented that an inspection would be coordinated. I remained in contact with all involved parties and relied on BMW\u2019s stated intent to contact the tow facility directly to arrange inspection. Despite this, BMW did not make contact with the tow company prior to the vehicle\u2019s disposal. After the vehicle had already been sold by the tow yard, BMW indicated that coordination had not occurred and that inspection was no longer possible, resulting in loss of physical evidence.  This complaint is submitted due to concern regarding a vehicle fire occurring while the vehicle was not in operation, inside a residential structure, and due to the manufacturer\u2019s handling of the matter in a way that prevented timely inspection and meaningful safety review despite early notification and cooperation. When it does, the car goes into neutral and this is dangerous if driving on the highway at higher speeds and needing to pull over into right hand lane.   I've not yet taken it to a dealer to look at, just a certified BMW repair shop. A call was made to Canton, BMW and Corporate BMW to make a report on BMW rapidly accelerating with brakes completely on.  Corporate personelle are to call me to get a report from me and send a special team to investigate the \"rapid acceleration\" while the brakes were on. I turned the steering wheel towards the left and the back of the car went to the left. The bumper gently tapped a white column that had been out of sight all the way further over my right shoulder. I gently pressed on the brake, and when I switched the gear shift into drive, the car suddenly and explosively accelerated forward extremely fast and sped out of control. I pressed the brakes to stop the car, which did nothing, and the car slammed into cement wall so hard that it sounded like an explosion and the air bags deployed. I hit my mouth/face/head on the air bag and got whiplash from the sudden stop. When I got out of the car, a couple who\u2019d heard the explosion drove by and asked if I was ok. After a few moments I reached into the car to turn off ignition switch.  This event resulted in very serious damage to the car, which was totaled, and I received medical injuries. This incident was reported to my automobile insurance company and to North America BMW, who has escalated the report to higher levels due to the seriousness of the incident, and will be doing investigations this week.  The accelerator pedal or gear box dangerously and seriously malfunctioned, and the car is available for inspection upon request.  My safety was seriously at risk as I have headaches and whiplash symptoms. Upon inspection from the outside, it appears clear that there was an outward explosion - pictures and video show the glass around the perimeter of the hole angled upward toward the sky.  Glass of course showered into the cabin as well.  Despite the dispersion of glass within the interior of the cabin, fortunately I did not suffer any cuts or other injury.  But the incident was extremely dangerous.  The explosion was very loud and could easily cause a driver to become distracted and/or lose control of the vehicle, especially if occurring under heavier traffic conditions.  Obviously the risk of a cut and/or injury to the eyes is significant as well.  I called a local BMW auto dealership to discuss the issue.  The service advisor indicated that he has seen this happen a number of times with BMW vehicles but that BMW will not cover the cost of repair unless the vehicle is still under warranty. As noted by a reply from a BMW master certified technician, this is a known issue and a defect/flaw in the design where the ground wire in the taillight is undersized, thus resulting in overload and subsequent melting of the connector.  Post after post on multiple sites contain BMW owners stating the exact same issue and cause regarding the brown/ground wire leading to an electrical short.  An electrical short causing a connector to actually melt seems like a safety issue.   This can lead to a fire.   I find this disturbing, especially with a toddler that is strapped into a car seat in the back. IT HIT THE CAR THE FIRST TIME AND CONTINUED REVVING AND MOVED FORWARD HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT SEVERAL TIMES.  THE CAR IN FRONT WAS AT A COMPLETE STOP ALL READY WHEN I HIT IT.   MY CAR WOULD  NOT STOP DESPITE MY CONTINUING TO HOLD THE BRAKE DOWN FIRMLY.. IT CONTINUED TO HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME 3 OR 4 TIMES BEFORE FINALLY STOPPING.  THIS RESULTED IN THREE SUBSEQUENT CARS IN FRONT OF ME ALL BEING PUSHED INTO EACH OTHER.  I ADVISED MY INSURANCE CARRIER AND POLICE OF THE SITUATION.  THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE BMW DEALER NEAR ME TODAY, OCTOBER 16TH AND I TOLD THEM OF THE SITUATION.  I HAVE BEEN DRIVING 40 YEARS AND NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING LIKE THIS AND AM VERY VERY CERTAIN THE BRAKE WAS DEPRESSED  AND THE CAR AND IT WAS  NOT DRIVER ERROR.  I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS CAR AND AM PRESENTLY AWAITING TO HEAR BACK FROM THE CAR DEALER TO HEAR OF THEIR FINDINGS. I ALSO UNCOVERED SEVERAL OTHER PROBLEMS WITH THE TAILGATE.    THE KICKING FEATURE TO ACTIVATE TAILGATE LIFTING AND LOWERING DOESN'T WORK 100%.  VIGOROUS KICKING IN DIFFERENT SPOTS  IS NEEDED TO ACTIVATE THE HANDS FREE FEATURE.    SOMETIMES THERE IS A PARTIAL DROP AND REOPENING OF THE TAILGATE.  SOMETIMES THE ALARM WORKS AND SOMETIMES NOT.   WHEN HANDS FREE CLOSING OF HATCH,  AN OBSTRUCTION WILL NOT CAUSE THE DOOR TO RETREAT. GLASS CHIPS BEGAN FALLING ON US. STILL IN SHOCK, IT TOOK ME A FEW MINUTES TO REALIZE THAT I SHOULD CLOSE THE SUNSHADE! NOT KNOWING WHAT HAPPENED, WE WERE TOO SCARED TO EXIT THE CAR, SO MY DAUGHTER CALLED 911 AND I PRESSED MY SOS BUTTON FOR ASSISTANCE. WE SIMULTANEOUSLY WERE TRYING TO EXPLAIN THE SITUATION TO THE RECEIVERS OF OUR CALLS. A DC POLICE OFFICER ARRIVED AND QUICKLY ACCESSED THE INCIDENT. HE'D WITNESSED THE SAME ON A FEW OTHER MAKES OF CARS. HE ASSURED US THAT BASED ON THE OUTWARD PROTRUSION OF THE REMAINING GLASS, THE IMPACT WAS FROM WITHIN, IT HAD EXPLODED, NOT IMPLODED. THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF A SHOT OR OBJECT OF ANY SIZE HITTING THE CAR. THERE WERE A FEW PIECES OF VARIOUS SIZED SHATTERED GLASS ON THE BACKSEAT, WHERE MY GRANDSON'S CAR SEAT CADDY WAS. THE OFFICER EVENTUALLY CONVINCED ME IT WAS SAFE TO DRIVE TO MY DEALER AND I DID SO. WHEN I ARRIVED AT THE BMW DEALER, THE SERVICE MGR. IMMEDIATELY ACKNOWLEDGED TO ME AND GATHERING COWORKERS, OF SEEING PREVIOUS SUNROOF EXPLOSIONS. HOWEVER, IN TWO FOLLOW-UP CALLS HE STATED THAT BMW WOULD NOT COVER (PAY). THE 2ND CALL, AFTER FOLLOWING UP WITH HIS MANAGER PER MY REQUEST, HE STATED THAT [IT] COULD ONLY SHATTER IF SOMETHING HIT AN EXISTING CRACK...THE SAME WITH THE PREVIOUS SUNROOFS INCIDENTS HE HAD SEEN.
