The vehicle had to be towed and I was left stranded with no transportation. Prior to this failure, I had brought the vehicle to an authorized GM dealership for a recall inspection specifically related to the 6.2L engine on September 9, 2025 with 36,162 miles. The dealership technician inspected the vehicle and informed me that my engine was not defective and cleared it. Shortly after that inspection, the engine suffered a total failure at 46,6xx miles on the vehicle. I am currently leasing this vehicle at approximately $1,100 per month and have been without the vehicle for an extended period while it sits awaiting repair. GM customer care has been contracted and has indicated they cannot move forward with a buyback claim because the BBB is not taking my case because the vehicle is older then 2 years old which I know is a false legal claim. This is a serious safety concern, a catastrophic engine failure at highway speed poses significant risk to vehicle occupants and others on the road which appears consistent with other reported failures. I am aware that NHTSA has opened Recall Query RQ26001 investigating the adequacy of GM's remedy under recall 25V-274. My experience is consistent with the 36+ complaints that triggered this investigation, engine failure occurring after an authorized dealer performed the recall inspection and cleared the vehicle. The running boards become extremely slippery during light snow or minimal winter precipitation, creating a significant risk of slipping while entering or exiting the vehicle. This occurs during normal use and does not require heavy snow or ice. I have experienced multiple near-falls despite stepping carefully, and the condition is repeatable. Given that the Chevrolet Tahoe is commonly used as a family vehicle and may be accessed by children, elderly individuals, or passengers with limited mobility, I am concerned that the running boards present an unreasonable slip hazard under common winter driving conditions. At this time, no injury has occurred; however, the frequency and severity of the slipping raises concern for potential injury if the issue is not addressed. The running boards are factory-installed and have not been modified. I am requesting that NHTSA review this issue to determine whether the design or materials of the factory running boards meet reasonable safety standards for normal winter conditions. I successfully maneuvered the vehicle to a narrow shoulder, where I remained, accompanied by a Highway Patrol officer, for over three hours until a tow truck arrived. The GM certified dealership informed me that the engine was seized. The mechanics were unable to start or manually turn the engine. Upon removal of the engine’s oil pan, they found metal fragments in the oil. After having undergone an engine recall “fix” three months earlier, which included an inspection and oil service change to a more viscous 0W - 40, a new oil filter, and a new filler cap; in November, my engine failed and was replaced with a new 6.2L L87 engine. The Tahoe hesitates on acceleration when merging with highway traffic, the engine dies when decelerating, the check engine light flashes at highway speeds, and the instrument cluster turns off at random. The vehicle that has been outfitted with a brand new engine is currently at the Chevrolet dealership; however, just like in August of 2025 during the Recall inspection, the mechanics there were unable to find any problems with their work or the new engine. My safety was put at risk because the engine failure resulted in traction control malfunctions while going 70 mph up hill on a major interstate. This led to extreme shaking which did not stop until slowing down to below 15 mph. Luckily I was a mile from an exit and was able to coast off the road quickly; it was decent enough weather, and I was less than 5 miles from my destination so I could creep between 15-30 mph to not exacerbate traction control alarms. That slow mph did back up traffic behind me. As far as I am aware the problem was likely reproduced by the dealership service tech, which led to their recommendation to replace the whole engine. They do not consider it to be covered by any warranty anymore. The engine may be in their possession still, but I am unsure. There were zero warning lights/prompts from the vehicle that anything was going wrong prior to the shaking and loss of traction control at high speed. The dealer service team suggested that my high miles led to the engine failure. I do highway driving with it and have followed all manufacturer recommendations for oil changes, and even more frequent changes with OEM oil since about 80k miles. I do not think this engine should have failed at this amount of mileage. I made note of oil consumption around 95k miles and measured oil loss regularly. It was a little less than a quart every 2K to 3k miles which manufacturer states is within spec so I would top off oil. A year ago it had a TCM wire replaced after burning in half. 3 weeks ago I also had to replace the entire turbo. The wire rendered my car unable to go in gear. The turbo failure put me into limp mode. I think the turbo failure was a sign of a deeper issue that went undiagnosed.
On several occasions while operating the vehicle during inclement weather the windshield wipers intermittently stopped working. In April 2025 a recall was announced on our car for engine failure. In June of 2025 we received a letter stating that a fix for the recall was to have an inspection done. If passed, then an oil change and new cap would be done. This was completed. on [XXX], I was on the highway accelerating to get up the speed, when I heard a loud pop noise. Then i heard loud knocking coming from my engine, the check engine light came on with the traction light as well. The car then had sluggish acceleration and would not accelerate but would have high than normal RPMS and rev when trying to accelerate. I knew then that I had engine failure. I was able to get the car to a safe place and called the dealership right away. They got it towed to Marine Chevy since it was closer. The next day they did an inspection on the vehicle and said the camshaft and lifters were broken and had to be replaced. I said I would need a new engine replaced due to the damage and recall. I was told it would not be under recall because it was the top and not bottom. They said the GM refused the new engine but would not tell me if it was the General Manager or General Motors that refused. I called and texted multiple times asking for pictures. They refused to send me any until 9/9 after multiple attempts. They only sent me one of the rods and rocker arms showing a rod bent and stated it was the lifters. still no pictures of the camshaft broke or lifters. These problems already have multiple class action lawsuits out for this particular engine failure. I was told the recall would still be on the engine even after the repair, I can still have engine failure. Approx. 50 days later, we were informed that we were approved for a new transmission - which was also on backorder! Almost 80 days later, our new transmission has arrived and been installed. We are very disappointed with how GM has handled the issue. We were lucky our dealer provided a loaner, as many have not. There are after-market providers who clearly state the upgrades they've made to the valves bodies, and while GM says they've upgraded the ones they make now, they won't share any details. I'm aware of this same limp mode/rear wheel lock up happening multiple times (on the same vehicle) to people in very low-mileage vehicles (less than 1000 miles). The gas pedal became unresponsive, and the engine ceased functioning entirely—without any prior warning or indicators. I was forced to coast into a nearby parking lot to prevent a potential collision. This incident put both myself and my child at serious risk of injury or worse, had it occurred at a higher speed or in heavier traffic. Once stopped, the vehicle would not restart. I had no choice but to have it towed to the dealership for evaluation. A week later, the dealership diagnosed the issue as a locked-up engine, confirming that a full engine replacement is necessary. Unfortunately, the replacement engine is currently on backorder, and they are unable to provide an estimated time of arrival. To make matters worse, the dealership has no loaner vehicles available for at least a month. GM only offers a rental reimbursement of $44 per day, which is significantly below the cost of even a basic rental vehicle in our area ($74/day). This leaves me with limited transportation options, even though I am currently making monthly payments of over $1,400 on a vehicle that is completely unusable. Adding to the severity of this situation, the vehicle is also subject to a manufacturer recall, but no remedy or parts are currently available to resolve the issue. As a parent of multiple children, this entire experience has left me shaken. I cannot begin to imagine the consequences had this failure happened at a higher speed or in less forgiving conditions. I am extremely concerned for my family’s safety going forward. GM has stated they will not extend or provide additional warranty coverage until the repair is complete, which leaves me feeling unprotected and anxious about the future reliability of this vehicle. The absence of warning signs and the total loss of power while driving make this a critical safety concern that must be addressed. We were 2 hours from home and my 2023 Tahoe basically went into limp mode while I was in the fast lane and the check engine light came on. No warning in advance. The speed reduced, which backed traffic up, and put me and my 4 children in danger. We finally got off the interstate and the vehicle had to be towed in to the nearest dealership. I had a friend drive us to enterprise where they put us in a Jeep Grand Wagoneer. On Monday, I received a call from the dealership stating they had good and bad news. The good news was the repair is covered by warranty but the bad news was it will be 2-3 months before they can get the part. The part is on back order and several people are waiting ahead of me. The said part is a valve body for the engine/transmission. The dealership also informed me that warranty will not cover a non-GM vehicle and that they will only pay for a rental up to 44.00/day. It’s not my fault the part is on back order, nor that enterprise gave me a non-GM vehicle. Also, I have a family of 6, which is why I have a Tahoe and I cannot be put in a small sedan. My children play sports, we have upcoming vacation, and quite frankly, I didn't pay 90,000.00 for a vehicle to be placed in a vehicle that I don’t feel is safe for my family. If I had wanted a sedan, I would have bought one. GM should take better care of their customers, especially when something is like this is not the customers fault!!! She was so close to the fast lane that there wasn’t enough room for a person to stand without being hit. We had our Tahoe towed to the closest dealer thinking maybe it was an alternator. The dealer confirmed it was a failed engine and that our vehicle is the third vehicle on their lot with the same failed engine. All of the failed engine vehicles have right at 40 k miles plus or minus 1k miles. The only problem that we had noticed before the failure, happened that morning when I took the Tahoe to fuel up for my wife prior to her leaving. I noticed the engine cranked slow for a second before it started. I thought maybe the battery is just getting weak and that as she drove it that day, it would charge the battery. The exact failure as I understand it from the technician is “ the 5th cylinder failed in the lower half of the engine.” Apparently this is failing because the bearings weren’t properly seated during manufacturing.
I went to reverse and my brakes didn’t work, the error then came on dash “break system failure max speed 43 mph” I then had to drift into a parking lot to wait for my car to stop. Following the expiration of my complimentary OnStar subscription, I discovered that all voice-activated and Bluetooth functions are inoperable unless I purchase a separate wireless plan at $25 / month which I cannot afford. This is a stark contrast to my previous six Chevrolets, all of which allowed hands-free phone calls and navigation functionalities via Bluetooth without requiring an additional subscription. I have contacted two Chevrolet dealerships, spoken with numerous employees, and reached out to OnStar, spending a total of nearly two hours on the phone attempting to resolve this issue. Unfortunately, no solution has been found. My primary concern is safety. Manually operating my phone while driving is unacceptable, and in some states illegal, putting myself and others at risk. Additionally, the lack of hands-free navigation significantly detracts from the convenience and value of the vehicle. While I appreciate the technological advancements in the 2023 Tahoe, the current system feels restrictive and potentially detrimental to customer safety. I understand the potential for additional revenue through data plans, but I believe the potential for unsafe driving and safety concerns outweighs this consideration. On 5/28/2024, between 5 and 6pm (rush hour) I merged onto State Highway 32 in Maryland. I accelerated to match the speed of traffic and moved to the far-left lane. I was traveling between 60 and 65 MPH when my vehicle shifted into neutral by itself. I was unable to shift the vehicle back into drive. There was no shoulder on the left, so I had to coast through 2 lanes of traffic moving at a similar speed to reach the far-right lane. I could have very easily caused an accident, injuring myself or others. After successfully pulling off onto the shoulder I was still unable to move out of neutral. I had to shut off my engine and restart the vehicle to shift it into drive. I was unable to recreate the failure and safely made it home. In the days following the incident, I began to hear a clicking sound when I accelerated. At no time did a check engine light turn on and my OnStar vehicle report showed my Tahoe was in good health, including the engine. I brought the vehicle to Criswell Chevrolet on 6/14/24 to service the vehicle. I was told later that afternoon that my vehicle required a brand new engine. It had been installed on a set of Chevrolet wheels before arriving at the dealership and that tire/wheel combo was installed on the Tahoe by Chevrolet in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The tire failure appeared to occur without provocation and failed on a 2.1 mile drive from the store home. The tire on the rim was mostly covered by the edge of the rim and it was very hard to spot visually. There was no damage to the rim, nor any reason the tire might have been lacerated by the rim. Upon dismount for replacement, the damage appears to be a tear or rip and does not appear to be puncture damage. The tire was replaced at Chevrolet and they noted that there was no reason for the damage (and charging us for the failure). The tire was then shipped to Bridgestone and was returned to the Chevrolet dealer and it was explained that they said, "it happens". The only warning lamp that illuminated was the TPMS low pressure warning as the tire quickly deflated. I still have the tire in my possession for inspection.
