Vehicle is outside of current engine recall window due to the engine build date being July 15, 2024. Engine was over maintained, oil and oil filter changed 6 times in 17,732 miles, first oil and filter change performed at 544 miles, when 5W30 oil was put in engine, installed a magnetic drain plug and installed Filter Mags on oil filter. Ran 5W30 oil for 2 oil changes, then moved to 0W40 oil. Oil analysis performed for each oil change. Results were looking acceptable up until the next to last oil change at 13,801 miles. Changed engine oil and filter on 6/12/2026 @17,732 miles. Found a heavy build up of metal particles on the magnetic drain plug and when oil filter was cut open there was a heavy build up of metal particles where the Filter Mags were located and the filter element had fine metal particles in entire engine oil filter element. The engine has made no noise and is still running, but based on the evidence the engine is currently failing and if I would have continued to drive it, the engine would likely lock up on the highway. CLEARLY GM DID NOT solve the crankshaft problem July 1, 2024 and CLEARLY using a higher viscosity oil like 0W40 will not keep these engines from failing. The check engine light illuminated and multiple warnings appeared including emissions system, variable valve timing system, engine and transmission failures shown on the GMC app. I contacted the selling dealership and was given an appointment 4 days later. Later that day I drove less than 5 miles to pick up my children from school. During that drive the vehicle filled with a strong gasoline odor and exhaust fumes were overwhelming. I feared the vehicle could catch fire. I contacted the dealership again, stated the vehicle was unsafe, dropped it off at approximately 8:00 PM and was required to obtain my own rental vehicle. After one week I was told the engine required a camshaft and lifter replacement. Inspected & approved by extended warranty, parts were ordered and installed. I retrieved the vehicle on 23 days after the initial failure. The following morning (24th day) while driving approximately 75 mph on a major interstate with my children the vehicle suddenly shifted into neutral and would not re-engage. I was unable to shift into any gear and coasted to a narrow shoulder inches from traffic and guardrail. The dashboard stated the vehicle could not shift into gear and instructed me to push the start button. The engine would not restart. We were stranded approximately two hours in 10-degree weather on a major interstate with heavy semi-truck traffic. Roadside assistance was required. 3 days later the dealership stated the failure was a fuse block. After replacement the vehicle was test driven and stated to be operating normally. A second dealership employee test drove the vehicle, it died again and had to be towed back to the dealership. The battery was replaced after draining while disabled. Repeated mechanical and electrical failures resulted in complete loss of power at highway speeds and placed my children and me in immediate danger. I no longer believe this vehicle is safe to operate.
This report documents two separate safety incidents involving the same vehicle that occurred on different dates. Approximately one month prior to the most recent incident, while driving my young children to school, the vehicle experienced a sudden and severe loss of braking effectiveness while in motion. I was unable to stop normally at stop signs and had to roll through and roll to a stop. I was required to press the brake pedal fully to the floor to slow the vehicle, and even then braking response was significantly reduced and not functioning as designed. The engine remained running and the vehicle could still accelerate. After stopping and restarting the vehicle, braking function temporarily returned. On a later date, while again transporting my children, the vehicle experienced a complete loss of power while driving. The vehicle abruptly shut down while in motion. I was unable to accelerate and experienced loss of power assisted braking. The vehicle only came to a stop after coasting. Following this shutdown, a burning or melted plastic odor was present. The vehicle was later towed and inspected by a dealership. The battery was replaced; however, this did not resolve the issue. After the battery replacement, the vehicle later hesitated to start again. The exact cause of these failures remains unknown. These incidents occurred without warning and represent serious safety critical failures involving braking and propulsion systems. Both incidents placed my children, myself, and other motorists at risk. Had either event occurred on a highway or heavily trafficked roadway, there would have been little to no ability to safely slow or stop the vehicle, creating a significant risk of collision or serious injury. Due to these events, I no longer feel safe operating this vehicle and have stopped driving it. The vehicle remains available for inspection.
Vehicle can be completely off and windshield wipers are still going. While driving at highway speed (about 60–70 mph), the vehicle suddenly lost power and shifted into neutral on its own. While still moving, I tried multiple times to shift back into Drive so I could safely get off the road, but it would not engage. I was only able to coast partially onto the shoulder before the vehicle came to a complete stop, still partly exposed to traffic. The engine shut off and would not restart at all. It would not go into Drive or Neutral, and the vehicle was completely dead. And it had to be towed. The dealer later told me the engine had failed and that a new engine was installed. About a week later, I picked the vehicle up. Less than 20 minutes after leaving the dealership and getting back on the highway, smoke started coming from the vehicle and warnings appeared, messages that the engine was overheating and that I needed to stop the engine immediately. The vehicle was not drivable again and had to be towed back. I again had to arrange transportation home. A few days later, I picked the vehicle up again. Since then, I have had serious four-wheel-drive and drivetrain issues. The vehicle became stuck in 4 Low and I could not get it out for over a day. When it finally came out, the drive mode buttons stopped working correctly. Selecting 2 High sometimes puts it into 4 High, selecting Auto puts it into 2 High, and Auto mode no longer appears. Even when it shows 4 High, the steering is restricted cannot steer 100% to the right or left and the vehicle binds, pops, and jumps when turning. When you turn the knob to disable the automatic lights to avoid blinding someone while parked, the knob returns to the auto position as expected. This is a good system to ensure that the next time you start the car, the lights are in auto again. The issue is with the way the system indicates what is happening to the driver. When the lights are set to auto, the “auto” indicator on the knob is illuminated. If you turn the knob to running lights or full lights, the corresponding indicator lights up as expected. However, when you turn the lights off, the indicator light returns to “auto” even though the lights are actually off. While the physical knob should return to auto to make sure the system resets properly at the next startup, the indicator should switch to the “off” position so the driver knows the lights are off. I drove off in the city and assumed my lights were on because the knob said auto, but I later realized they were off. This creates a serious safety hazard. There is no way to know in that situation if your lights are actually on by looking at the knob unless you cycle the lights again. There is currently no estimated date for repair completion due to a lack of available parts. This is the second time the vehicle has been in the shop for the same unresolved issue. Earlier in 2025, I brought the car in due to driveability concerns and error messages appearing on the dash, but the dealership dismissed it and claimed I had “turned the vehicle on wrong,” despite it having a push-button start. The problem persisted until June 2025, when they finally diagnosed the valve body failure. This issue directly affects drivability and vehicle safety, particularly during acceleration and gear shifting. I am concerned that General Motors is aware of widespread valve body and transmission failures in these vehicles, yet continues to produce and sell new units while failing to ensure parts are available to support timely repairs. It is unacceptable that a major safety-related transmission issue can sideline a relatively new vehicle for over a month with no resolution in sight. GM’s lack of urgency in addressing this defect suggests a disregard for consumer safety and reliability. The issue involves a serious engine defect related to the crankshaft and/or connecting rods, which can result in catastrophic engine failure and loss of propulsion while driving—a clear and dangerous safety risk. I first became concerned when early reports of this issue began circulating publicly. As a father of young children, I became increasingly uneasy that my vehicle could potentially fail while in operation. Receiving GM’s formal recall letter only validated my growing concern for my family’s well-being. It’s deeply frustrating and unsettling. The notice states that parts to repair or replace the engine are not currently available, and offers no clear timeframe for when a remedy will be provided. I feel like we are being strung along while forced to continue using a vehicle that may become unsafe at any moment. This delay is unacceptable. There has been no offer of a loaner vehicle, no proactive communication from the dealer, and no assurance from GM that they are prioritizing driver safety over logistics. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate whether GM is doing enough to provide timely remedies to affected customers. I also urge you to consider whether interim solutions (such as alternative transportation or more aggressive recall execution) should be mandated. Thank you for your attention to this matter. We stopped again, waiting a few minutes and were able to get back on the interstate and complete out trip without any issues. 3 days later while driving on the interstate again, the vehicle had a weird winding noise coming from it. Once I was able to get off the instate the engine was knocking very loudly and had no power. Got the vehicle to our home and had it towed to the dealership the next day. Dealership gave the diagnoses that a new engine, radiator and engine coolant lines needed to be replaced. The vehicle had 2,248 miles on it and was purchase 2.5 weeks prior.
