American Honda Motor Co., Inc., filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California) alleges a defect in rear body seam seals that lets water leak into the power tailgate control module, causing it to fail. The symptoms and physical evidence I found match those described by other owners and in the litigation. The engine would rev but no acceleration was occuring. There had been no signs of any issue prior and no warning lights appeared. We were able to make it to the side of the road and immediately called a tow truck to take us to the nearest Honda dealership. We had to wait on the side of a very busy interstate with our one and three year old and then get all of us safely to the dealership after the tow truck arrived. We were lucky that the sudden stop to our acceleration did not cause an accident and that we were not hit while parked on the shoulder (the tow truck driver indicated that there had been two collisions of that nature in that area in the month before our incident). The dealership confirmed that the transmission needed to be replaced a couple of days later. When asked what the issue was we were really only given a vague explanation of a part inside potentially failing and causing a ripple effect. The van was 6 months out of the five year warranty and only 272 miles over the 60k warranty. It had previously been serviced by a Honda dealership in March of this year and nothing was noted at that time about the transmission needing attention (such as a transmission fluid change). At no point had the onboard \"Maintenance Minder\" indicated that we needed a transmission fluid change as well. The service technician who diagnosed the transmission failure also indicated that there was nothing in the transmission fluid (like parts or metal shavings) to show where the failure occurred. The Auto Start/Stop function only works intermittently on our 2021 Honda Odyssey.  Occasionally, when the Auto Start/Stop function does shut off the engine when the vehicle is at a complete stop, the engine fails to restart on its own.  The vehicle is available for inspection upon request.   How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk?  This malfunction occurs intermittently and without warning when the vehicle is at a complete stop in traffic.  The vehicle cannot be driven under its own power in this condition, often leaving it disabled in a traffic lane with other vehicles stuck behind and/or passing by at normal travel speeds.  As such, it endangers both the occupants of my vehicle and the other vehicles in the vicinity.    Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes.  My local Honda dealership acknowledged the problem and completed a PGM-FI software update.  However, this update did not correct the issue, and Honda refuses to take financial responsibility for the repairs necessary to correct the problem.  Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others?  Yes.  The following timeline details my interactions with my local Honda dealership regarding this issue:  4/13/23 - The dealership inspected the vehicle and claimed the Auto Start/Stop system was \"operating as designed\"; 9/6/24 - The dealership completed a PGM-FI update as directed by a Honda product update campaign; 2/12/26 - The dealership inspected the vehicle, suggested battery replacement (which tested good on 3/3/26), and if still not corrected, advised replacement of the starter at my expense.  Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? A \u201cpower tailgate problem\u201d warning appeared, and the tailgate became completely inoperable. It would not latch manually or automatically, even when applying force. The latch would spring back open, and no mechanical sound came from the door.  Because the tailgate would not latch, the interior lights stayed on, and the vehicle continued to display \u201ctailgate open\u201d warnings. I could not secure the tailgate for driving, which created a safety hazard since the door could not be properly closed during travel.  A few days later, both sliding doors also stopped functioning, and none of the powered doors (tailgate or sliding doors) would operate from the interior switches, exterior buttons, or key fob.  The Honda service center inspected the vehicle and reported that the tailgate control module was corroded and had clear evidence of water damage. They stated that they would not replace the module until the vehicle was evaluated by a body shop because a water leak was likely present and would continue damaging components.  The body shop later confirmed that water intrusion was entering through the upper left rear pillar, caused by a leak in the roof seam area. Water traveled into the rear side panel and damaged the tailgate control module and related electrical systems. Their findings were documented and also confirmed by my insurance inspector.  Prior to the failure, there were no symptoms. The only warning occurred at the moment the system failed (\u201cpower tailgate problem\u201d). The issue occurred without any impact, accident, or misuse. The defects caused multiple powered doors to become inoperable, which is a significant safety risk for both passengers and the driver. June 19th 2025.  On highway doing 70-75 mph when heard another loud pop and shudder.   No pot hole or any significant bump hit.  Stopped, pulled wheel, and found right rear spring broken.  Honda dealership in Marysville OH unable to find new spring either through OEM or aftermarket.   We have also been unable to find aftermarket or junkyards.   Being told that there is a nationwide backorder and no eta for when replacment parts are going to start being available.   So being forced to continue driving a vehicle that is unsafe.  First this does not seem normal for springs just to randomly break.  Second for a critical suspension component on a relatively new vehicle, why is manufacturer unable to proved parts. We took it to the dealership today and they diagnosed the problem, stating it is a Gate Control Unit failure (error code P1378 and P1379).  Dealer confirmed what we experienced. We documented the safety problem via video.  We were able to temporarily fix the issue by disconnecting the car battery overnight and reconnecting it the following morning.    Safety concerns - This is a concerning issue as the tail gate could open by itself while driving, and/or could open by itself when you have the car parked in public, allowing theft of any items left inside. It could also open while someone is driving along a parking lot and cause an accident.  There was no warning light prior to the malfunction of the tail gate control unit. The \"RADAR OBSTRUCTED\" warning cannot be reset by restarting the vehicle or disconnecting the battery, requiring recalibration of the RADAR at the cost of $800 each time since it takes several hours to do (per Dealership).   4. The official Honda Odyssey Forum online has countless complaints on the same issue without resolution by Honda.   5. Honda has acted in bad-faith towards their customers since this defect impacts the vehicle's advanced safety features for which buyers incur additional expenses, endangering the lives of passengers.   6. The dealership tried to tell me that the camera for the adaptive cruise might be seeing things in its peripheral vision area, but there is nothing there, the shoulder of the road is wide and free of obstacles. I've owned many other brands of vehicle, and never had this trouble with the cruise control on any of them. The only warning indication provided by the vehicle was an orange-box \u201cBRAKE\u201d warning displayed on the dashboard and the accompanying warning beeps, both simultaneous to the actual brake actuation. No indications or warnings appeared prior to or after the actual braking.  No obstacle or object on the roadway was visible to either the driver or front seat passenger. All traffic lanes were clear for a minimum of 100 yards ahead of the vehicle. Weather was clear and dry. The pavement was dry and clear of any debris.   The construction zone where the incident occurred carries both east and westbound traffic on the normally westbound (north) side of the expressway. The left side of the traffic lanes are lined with continuous, concrete \u201cJersey\u201d barriers. The incident took place at the western end of the zone, at the point where the westbound lanes expand from two to three lanes. This is approximately where the left-side parallel-to-traffic barriers end and a small, separated section of angled-to-traffic barriers is revealed, along with some other barrier sections in the median area between the roadways.  This incident (November 26, 2022) was the second time this malfunction has occurred in same vehicle in approximately the same area on I-70. On August 11, 2022, an essentially identical event took place under similar conditions. At the time of the issue I was driving the van at approximately 30 mph on flat streets through my town.   I've expressed my concerns that this defect renders the vehicle extremely unsafe.  Over the past two weeks I've contacted Honda Corporate repeatedly requesting further repairs or assurances that this error would not occur again and have been passed around to case managers' voice mailboxes and have been unable to speak to anyone about my concerns. I have 3 small kids (one of them a baby, and a five year old) and this is a precarious situation to be in. Also, this happens intermittent in all weather conditions (be it cold or warm or hot doesn't matter) and we don't know when this will happen and cannot replicate consistently on demand. Just happens maybe every few days but is more consistently happening.  There are several similar complaints from Odyssey owners, NHTSA, you are our only recourse to this as I feel this is a model wide problem which needs to be addressed by Honda from the factory with a recall.
