The sudden loss of steering assist immediately caused the steering wheel to become incredibly heavy and virtually locked, requiring extreme, dangerous physical exertion to maintain minimal control over the direction of the vehicle. Due to the violent and unpredictable change in steering dynamics at speed, I was forced out of my lane and ran over a curb and came moments away from experiencing a severe, life-threatening collision. The vehicle was rendered entirely undrivable and presents an immediate, catastrophic crash hazard. It had to be flatbed-towed to Infinity Valencia dealership. I am the original owner of this vehicle, and it has been meticulously maintained with exceptionally low mileage of 50,000 mile. Infinity previously issued mandatory federal safety recalls identical Direct Adaptive Steering (DAS) \"steer-by-wire\" software and module failures on the 2014-2016 model years (e.g., NHTSA Campaign number 16V433000). While the manufacturer asserted that the underlying engineering and software defects were fully resolved for the 2017 production year, this incident definitely proves that the catastrophic safety defect remains active, unmitigated, and present in the 2017 model year. Infinity Consumer Affairs and corporate databases currently lack proactive safety campaign for this specific VIN, leaving consumers entirely expose to a known, severe safety liability. I am filing this formal complaint to urge the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to open a formal defect investigation into the 2017 Infinity Q50/Q50s steering architecture and compel the manufacturer to expand the safety recall before this unmitigated defect results in fatal accident.","products":[{"type":"Vehicle","productYear":"2017","productMake":"INFINITI","productModel":"Q50","manufacturer":"Nissan North America, Inc."}]},{"odiNumber":11739745,"manufacturer":"Nissan North America, Inc.","crash":false,"fire":false,"numberOfInjuries":0,"numberOfDeaths":0,"dateOfIncident":"04/29/2022","dateComplaintFiled":"05/23/2026","vin":"JN1CV7AP2HM","components":"ENGINE","summary":"I have had several major problems with this car's engine. The vehicle was serviced multiple times by a franchised dealer, which diagnosed the issue as brake-related and performed brake repairs. The noise was not resolved, and the vehicle was returned in the same condition. Shortly after service, an independent mechanic discovered a cracked/broken brake pad installed on the vehicle. Due to safety concerns, the manufacturer authorized inspection at a separate franchised dealership under different ownership. That inspection confirmed aftermarket brake pads, rotors, and related components of unknown origin installed on both the front and rear, missing OEM hardware, improper lubrication, and wheel bearing issues contributing to the noise. The inspecting dealer documented that the braking system must be returned to OEM specifications before safe operation and further diagnosis could continue. Despite this, the manufacturer has declined to require OEM remediation, and the vehicle continues to operate with unauthorized aftermarket brake components. The grinding noise has continued and has since shifted toward the rear. The condition is reproducible, documented by video, and confirmed by independent inspection. There is infact one in Florida that has a similar experience as mine. Talking to the dealer and Infiniti neither wanted to do a goodwill jesters and would only reduce the cost by a few thousand dollars. That still meant that I would need to put out more than 4000 to get a safety issue that should be covered. The symptoms and error codes are exactly the same. The vehicle remains at CarMax Naperville, where it has been since March 2025. Internal repair orders show CarMax performed two failed inspections in August 2020 before selling the vehicle as \u201cCarMax Certified\u201d on September 3, 2020. The vehicle should not have passed certification. Shortly after purchasing the vehicle, I noticed it was pulling hard to the right. During my first tire rotation and oil change, the technician informed me that all four tires were severely dry-rotted and unsafe to drive on. CarMax had represented the vehicle as fully inspected and road-ready. These conditions suggest the vehicle had sat for an extended period after a prior four-point accident and should have never been certified for sale. None of this was disclosed to me at purchase. In March 2025, the engine failed. CarMax later reported that a replacement engine was installed, part #10102-6HN3A (single-turbo) instead of the required #10102-5CH2D (twin-turbo VR30DDTT). This engine does not match the original factory specifications for my VIN. Infiniti of Naperville confirmed that my vehicle qualifies for a free extended turbo and engine warranty (TSB P4A05/P4A06), but CarMax declined to use the required OEM one-time-use parts, voiding that coverage. CarMax has refused to provide inspection reports, diagnostic data, emissions test results, or engine serial numbers despite over forty written requests. I have no documentation confirming what work was performed or whether the vehicle is safe or compliant with emissions standards. The car has now been sitting at CarMax for over seven months, with rusted brakes and unknown mechanical condition. They are just concerned about me coming to get the car. This raises serious concerns about safety, emissions compliance, and potential consumer fraud involving improper certification and undisclosed prior damage. THE CODES SET WERE B130D, C1A16 AND PO340. THESE CODES SET THE FIRST INSTANCE, BUT HAVE NOT SET DURING THE PAST TWO OCCURRENCES OF THE SAME ACCELERATION ISSUE. THESE INSTANCES ARE COMPLETELY RANDOM WHICH MAKE THEM EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. FOR INSTANCE, THE CAR WILL BE DRIVING COMPLETELY NORMAL, I WILL STOP AND AN INTERSECTION AND THEN WHEN I GO TO TURN OUT INTO THE INTERSECTION, I GO INTO THIS STALL CONDITION WITHOUT WARNING. THE DEALERSHIP HAS HAD THE CAR 4 SEPARATE TIMES AND EACH TIME THEY HAVE REFUSED TO FIX ANYTHING ON THE CAR, DESPITE HAVING A VIDEO OF THE OCCURRENCE AND CONFIRMING THAT THE ACCELERATION WAS ENTIRELY ABNORMAL. I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO DRIVE THIS CAR IF INFINITI REFUSES TO FIX IT, BUT FEEL IT IS LIKELY THAT IT WILL CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH TO ME AND MY FAMILY IF I DRIVE IT. THE VEHICLE WAS USED AND HAD APPROXIMATELY 38K ON THE ODOMETER. WITHIN 2 WEEKS OF OWNING THE VEHICLE THE REAR BRAKES PADS NEED TO BE REPLACED AND THE ROTORS NEEDED TO BE RESURFACED. THIS WAS EXPECTED DUE TO THE HIGH MILEAGE ON A 1 YEAR OLD VEHICLE. THEN ON JANUARY 11TH 2019 I TOOK MY 2017 INFINITI Q50 IN FOR ITS OIL CHANGE AT 43,000 MILES WITH GLENDALE INFINITI IN GLENDALE CALIFORNIA. WHEN THE SERVICE WAS COMPLETED THE SERVICE ADVISOR HAD NOTIFIED ME THAT MY REAR BRAKE PADS WHERE AT 4/32'S AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED WITHIN 6,000 MILES. I HAD THE BRAKE PADS REPLACED WITH THE FACTORY RECOMMENDED BRAKE PADS AT FIRESTONE IN ALHAMBRA ON 6 OCTOBER AS STATED ABOVE. I DID TAKE THE CAR BACK TO FIRESTONE IN ALHAMBRA CA FOR SQUEALING BRAKES MID DECEMBER 2018 AND IT WAS ALSO DISCOVERED THAT THE FRONT BRAKE PADS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED ALONG WITH THE ROTORS NEEDING TO BE RESURFACED. THE REAR BRAKES NOW SQUEAL AND WILL NEED REPLACEMENT FOR THE 2ND TIME IN LESS THAN 3 MONTHS. MY CAR IS USED TO DROP MY SON OFF AT DAYCARE AND MY WIFE AT WORK AND THEN TO PICK THEM BOTH UP AND SOME OCCASIONAL TRAVEL AND WORK FOR MY PART TIME JOB AS A RIDESHARE EMPLOYEE WHICH TOTAL 859 MILES IN DECEMBER. I HAVE SEEN COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER OWNERS ABOUT HAVING THE REAR BRAKE PADS WEAR PREMATURELY. I ASK ED THE SERVICE ADVISOR WITH GLENDALE INFINITI ABOUT IT AND HE SIMPLY STATED IT IS DUE TO HARSH BRAKING. I RESPONDED WITH IS THAT SO BECAUSE THEY WHERE REPLACED WITH FACTORY BRAKE PADS IN OCTOBER 2018. ABOUT 2 HOURS INTO MY TRIP I CHECKED THE VEHICLE INFORMATION AND DISCOVERED THAT THE TIRE PRESSURE WAS NOT AT MANUFACTURES SPECIFICATIONS (35PSI). THE FRONT TWO TIRES WERE AT ABOUT 44PSI, THE REAR DRIVERS SIDE TIRE WAS AT 59PSI AND THE REAR PASSENGER TIRE WAS AT ABOUT 40PSI. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED HERTZ EMERGENCY ROAD ASSISTANCE (8006544174) AND NOTIFIED THEM OF THE ISSUE. I WAS ADVISED TO NOTIFY THE LOCATION UPON RETURNING THE VEHICLE. AFTER MAKING THIS CALL I WAS IN AN AUTO ACCIDENT. THE VEHICLE HYDROPLANED AND SLID ACROSS THE HIGHWAY, EVENTUALLY MAKING ONE OR MORE 360 TURNS UNTIL STOPPING. I CALLED HERTZ EMERGENCY ROAD ASSISTANCE TO NOTIFY THEM OF THE INCIDENT AND WAS ADVISED TO DRIVE TO THE CLOSEST OPEN LOCATION WHICH WAS OVER 130 MILES FROM THE ACCIDENT, SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS STILL OPERABLE. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THIS INCIDENT WAS A RESULT OF MANUFACTURE ISSUES, I DO HOWEVER BELIEVE THAT NEGLIGENCE ON BEHALF OF THE RENTAL CAR COMPANY IN MAINTAIN THE VEHICLE RESULTED IN THE VEHICLE HYDROPLANING. WHEN I RETIRED TO THE HERTZ LOCATION AT BUSH INTERCONTINENTAL, I SPOKE WITH ALEC, A MANAGER AT THE LOCATION, AND HE CONFIRMED THAT IT IS STANDARD PROTOCOL THAT TIRE PRESSURE IS CHECKED FOR ALL RETURNED VEHICLES. IF THE TIRE PRESSURE ON THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT CHECKED I AM CONFIDENT THERE ARE OTHERS WITH THE SAME OR SIMILAR ISSUES. I AM NOT SURE IF THIS IS THE PROPER AUTHORITY TO HANDLE THIS MATTER BUT I DO BELIEVE AN INVESTIGATION OF SOME SORT IS NECESSARY.
