I realize you stated the A/C is not a safety item but I read many complaint on this vehicle on the internet.  I am a retired mechanic and the failure rate for evaporators is very low.  I changed out maybe 10 in 30 years working on vehicles.  This needs to be looked into and addressed by GM and corrected.
