I took the car to the dealership the next day and today they've told me that it could be a number of parts but what we have on order is the evap canister and the n80 purge valve. If this does not fix it then it is the entire gas tank, very expensive. There were no warning lamps and this issue was reproduced at the dealership. They've told me there's no recalls or warranties but I have read that many other people in the local VW group have had this issue.
