This could very likely cause an accident as the car will brake without the brake lights illuminating  resulting in a following vehicle crashing into the car.  Also, unexpected braking could easily cause loss of control of the vehicle.  There were yellow (not red) warning lights on the instrument cluster indicating that there was a problem with the ABS/Anti-skid / 4WD drive system.
