The engine noise continued even after the car was warm.  The vacuum pump was diagnosed by the dealership and it was repaired under the manufacturer's warranty. From my understanding, the failure of the vacuum pump could cause the brakes to not respond. In December 2023 the vacuum pump displayed the same knocking/rattling sounds and the dealer diagnosed the vacuum pump as requiring replacement.
