The tires only had at the time 15,000 miles on them and the car is less than 3 years old.  I would have not known to check this as it is not in the usual lifespan of a tire, especially on a new car.  When reviewing my past inspections at service appointments with my Chevrolet dealership, I can see that they have noted the wear but not alerted me.
