I do not know the underlying cause however there are many people reporting this issue on social media sites.  Some suspect welding/bonding issues resulting in flex causing the crack under stress.  My car was sitting in the garage when the windshield cracked from the A-pillar inward.  All videos, pictures submitted from others show the crack in a similar fashion.  Driver/Passenger side from the A-Pillar.  Some have provided pictures/videos of brand new cars sitting on the lot with the crack.
