Once button was pressed to engage shifting gears manually, the gear number was not shown on the dash as usual, only the letter L. We were able to drive slowly to the next exit ramp to get safely off the road.  Notification about engine/transmission popped up on dash and on myGMC app. On star emailed report.   Vehicle was towed to local GM dealer and assessed. Have been told that transmission needs completely rebuilt, but no description of actual issue.
