I put vehicle in reverse and brakes did not engage at normal pedal pressure. I had to push the brakes with extreme force to slow down the backwards movement. I did not think I would be able to stop the car. I had driven the vehicle the night before in wintery conditions and parked in my detached unheated garage. I feel like there may have been ice build up on the brake pads/rotors. Has not happened again but I have not had the exact same conditions.  Will note the engine was revving at a little higher rpm because it was very cold out and was at start-up (normal behavior) but created a bit more force in reverse.
