When I had slowed to about fifteen miles an hour the car suddenly accelerated and the brakes were not enough to stop it so I shifted into neutral and stopped.  The engine continued to race in neutral.  I shifted into drive and things returned to normal.  I then started to move forward  and the car suddenly again accelerated rapidly.  I shifted into neutral and then into drive and things returned to normal.
