Luckily this happened when we were backing out of the driveway and not at speed.  There were no warnings lights, just a loud noise from the wheel when it failed.  There is already a recall about this problem for the same year and model of my car, but the dealer is saying my car is not part of the recall.  Here is a link to the recall.
