Upon pressing accelerator further to increase speed to pass another vehicle, I lost all electric power and the vehicle lost speed down to 40mph, despite accelerator pedal being pressed to the floor.  Approx 3-5 seconds later, gas engine started, revved high, vehicle lunged forward to 65mph, continued to accelerate after releasing accelerator pedal, and was able to be slowed by pressing brake.  This same situation was replicated 9 hours later on the same highway.
