This is a safety-critical structural component and part of the rear suspension mounting system. When braking, the vehicle swerved hard to the right and crossed into the shoulder. Fortunately, the vehicle was already in the right lane, which likely prevented a more serious incident. The failure created a serious risk of loss of control and crash.  After the incident, I took it straight to a mechanic on the way and the condition was identified as a broken rear crossmember caused by advanced corrosion.
