Sometimes there is a hard bang when downshifting from 4 to 3. The 10R80 transmission has a reputation for these issues. I took it into the Ford dealer for service and they found that the TCC solenoid was scored, fine metal shavings were found in the fluid indicating a torque converter failure, and the CDF drum was replaced because of a misaligned bushing.
