This is the clutch plates in the rear differential chattering and binding up. Over time this will wear bearings and gear out which in turn will lock up the rear differential causing a accident by loss of control. Jeep covered this problem up by a software update to the computer. All this does is change the behavior of the system as a whole not fix the problem.
