The collision resulted in damage to the rear bumper. I have reported this to BMW North America and requested a diagnostic scan to retrieve fault codes from the Park Assist module.  What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The Park Assist system (automated parking assistance) malfunctioned during an active parking maneuver. While the system was in control of the vehicle, it directed the car in reverse and struck an object. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request.  How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The vehicle moved autonomously and struck an object without driver input, resulting in a collision. A pedestrian, cyclist, or other vehicle in the path could have been seriously injured. The incident demonstrates the system cannot be trusted to safely detect and avoid obstacles while in control of the vehicle.  Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Not yet. The vehicle is being brought to the selling dealer for a diagnostic scan to retrieve fault codes from the Park Assist module. This report is being filed prior to that inspection.  Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Not yet. BMW North America has been notified. Dealer inspection is pending.  Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning lamps or messages appeared prior to the incident.
