The pedal was very hard to press, and when pressing with all my weight, I could slow the vehicle to a stop, but it took a great distance. There was no warning or malfunction indicator until I pulled into a parking lot a few minutes later. At that point, a \"Service Brake Assist\" message appeared.   Had I been in traffic, going faster, or in an area with pedestrian crossings, this could have caused a possibly deadly crash.   I searched online and found that there is a vacuum pump that is known to fail on this vehicle, and can cause these symptoms. Upon replacing this vacuum pump, the issue was resolved.
