The temperature gauge rose rapidly, engine power was severely limited (could not exceed ~40 mph even with full throttle), and pink coolant fluid was visibly boiling and gushing from the reservoir/overflow tank. I immediately pulled over safely. After cooling for 2–3 hours, the vehicle restarted and completed the climb with lighter driving, but the incident was dangerous due to reduced power on a winding mountain road with oncoming traffic. A check engine light with code P04DB (Crankcase Ventilation System Disconnected) is also present. Coolant pump, relays, fuses, and oil was checked and showed no milky contamination or issues at the time. Some white exhaust and smell was present at the time. This matches the well-known coolant intrusion defect in 2015–2018 Ford 2.0L EcoBoost engines (see TSB 19-2346), where coolant leaks internally into cylinders, causing overheating, misfires, and potential sudden engine failure. Mechanics initially found no issue on a cold check, which is common with this intermittent problem. Safety Risk: Sudden power loss, overheating, and “Engine Coolant Over Temperature” warnings on mountain roads or highways create a serious hazard of stranding, loss of control, or accident. This defect has affected thousands of similar Ford vehicles and should be investigated for a safety recall. I request NHTSA open or expand an investigation into this issue for the 2017 Ford Edge and similar models.
