As I approached an intersection, I tapped the brakes to turn off the cruise control. It did not turn off. I then pressed the brake pedal and it went further down than normal. The vehicle did not appear to even try and slow down or brake. I tried again, standing on the brakes with both feet. At this point, I knew I would not be stopping, as the pedal continued to feel strange, and not catching for lack of better terms. I did my best to steer around two sign poles directly in my path. Unfortunately due to not being able to control speed, I did hit one. I then continued on for approximately and 1/8 of a mile before my car finally came to a stop in the middle of a dirt field. I do not know if this was a software or mechanical issue with the brakes.
