The driver reported hearing a loud pop before the vehicle moved left.  COMPONENT: Left-front steering linkage. Scene photographs taken before towing show the two front wheels pointed in opposite directions, with the left front wheel turned well beyond the steering system's physical lock, which cannot occur with an intact linkage. The insurer's appraiser documented damage to the left-front inner tie rod, steering knuckle, lower control arm, wheel hub, and drive axle. The left front tire sidewall is torn and the rim is damaged. The vehicle and all components are preserved in post-crash condition and available for inspection.  EVENT DATA: A Bosch CDR download of the airbag control module by an independent forensic engineering firm recorded the five seconds before impact: steering wheel angle within 4 degrees of center throughout and 0 degrees at the final sample; speed 24.2 to 24.9 mph; steady light throttle; no braking; no ABS activity. The vehicle was not steered across the center line.  WARNINGS: None. A full-system diagnostic scan the day after the crash found no stored fault codes in the steering, brake, or airbag modules. No warning lamps or messages appeared before the incident.  INSPECTIONS: Police responded and filed a report; no summons was issued. The other driver told police the vehicle \"suddenly veered left.\" The insurer's appraiser inspected the vehicle. An independent forensic firm downloaded the event data recorder. Neither the manufacturer nor a dealer has inspected the vehicle.  SAFETY RISK: Loss of directional control at road speed caused a head-on-type collision with an oncoming vehicle, in which airbags deployed. Cause of the linkage separation is under investigation; it is unknown whether it preceded or resulted from impact.","products":[{"type":"Vehicle","productYear":"2022","productMake":"VOLKSWAGEN","productModel":"TAOS","manufacturer":"Volkswagen Group of America, Inc."}]}]}
