Under normal driving conditions, the structural aluminum alloy casting of the upper strut mount completely fractured and sheared apart. This structural metal failure allowed the highly pressurized front suspension strut shaft to completely blow through the mount assembly. The unleashed strut shot upward into the engine bay, shattering the protective plastic cowl shroud, striking the underside of the vehicle's hood, and causing significant secondary body and mechanical damage.
