It was in the past made of metal. Being it is now made of plastics it is now exposed to possibility of cracking due to changes in temperature hot and cold. It did in fact crack, failed, allowing engine coolant to mix with engines oil lubricant diluting oil lubricant thus causing engine to fail and loss of steering control creating the possibility of an accident. The manufacturer is aware of the failure of the oil filter housing.
