While traveling on [XXX] through [XXX]’s Grapevine, my vehicle unexpectedly jerked and appeared to slip out of gear. Engine RPMs increased to approximately 3,500–4,000 without corresponding acceleration and remained unusually high, including while driving on level ground. No warning lights or error messages appeared. The symptoms recurred after restarting the vehicle. The vehicle subsequently experienced complete loss of propulsion and would no longer move in Drive or Reverse, despite the engine revving. Genesis Santa Monica confirmed the no-movement condition. According to repair order #XXX, technicians found transmission fluid approximately one quart low, dark brown, and burnt-smelling. They added fluid, reset adaptive values, and performed a transmission control module relearn. No diagnostic trouble codes were found, and the vehicle remained inoperable. The dealership recommended transmission replacement at an estimated cost of approximately $15,000. I am concerned that an unexpected loss of power while traveling at freeway speeds could create a serious collision risk, particularly when no warning indicators appear. I request that NHTSA review this incident for a possible transmission-related safety defect and determine whether similar failures are occurring in other Genesis GV70 vehicles.
